The opening is about 5' by 5'. A few inches of dirty, scummy water can be seen sloshing around in the bottom of the hold. More coils of moldy rope, warped boards of ship's lumber and a couple of old barrels are within sight.
Those courageous enough to stick their heads down into the opening can see ship's balast still neatly piled in spots, a few hammocks still hanging from hooks on both sides sternward from the hatch. There's a bulkhead across the width of the boat about a third of the way from the stern. There are two doors in the bulkhead, one on either side of the center line.
