Posts: 3655 (03/05/04 08:38:11) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Getting onto the deck of the ship is easy - a short hop from the pier over the gunwales. The hinges on the forward hatch are almost rusted solid but, with everyone helping out, eventually the hinges break and the hatch is pried open. The opening is about 5' by 5'. A few inches of dirty, scummy water can be seen sloshing around in the bottom of the hold. More coils of moldy rope, warped boards of ship's lumber and a couple of old barrels are within sight. Those courageous enough to stick their heads down into the opening can see ship's balast still neatly piled in spots, a few hammocks still hanging from hooks on both sides sternward from the hatch. There's a bulkhead across the width of the boat about a third of the way from the stern. There are two doors in the bulkhead, one on either side of the center line.

"The wraiths are probably beyond those doors down there," she says when she pulls her head back out. "How can we open that area up to the light?"

Thinking for a moment, Eber asks the others, "I know that Enaborem said there would be a case of wine, but some places store wine in barrels. How do we know those old barrels in the forward hold aren't all that remains of the captian's wine stock? Have any of you actually seen a case of Ceaderspoke wine to know what we're looking for?"

"Not a chance. It's almost certainly going to be in bottles." He suddenly laughs out loud. "I guess wraiths would make pretty good guards for wine cellars. You don't want any sunlight ruining either. "Something to keep in mind for our retirement in Saltmarsh." He looks at the rusted hinges on the hatch and shrugs. "Let's give it a shot."

I hope that's enough sunlight to keep them confined to the shadows inside the boat. "Just a minute!" she says as Rolf, Alex, Pen, and Eber start working on sliding the roof back. Pen understands from the comments by Nadia, Eber, and Rolf that wraiths are capable of terrible things and that no sword has much of a chance of hurting them. "If this sunlight is too diluted from the thick clouds, then our next best hope is to turn them."Well, it takes more than a minute for her to take off her breastplate, take off her vest, hand it to Nadia and insist that she put it on, then put back on her breastplate while Nadia put the vest on." Pen insists. "I'll try to aid your turning as best I can if it comes to that." She hands Eber one of her magic weapon scrolls. "You have one and I'll have one. If I'm busy with trying to turn the wraiths, and you have the chance, enchant Rolf's halberd. You could even do it before we see how the turning works out." "OK. That's all I can think of to do," Pen admits. She does what she can to protect herself against the wraiths, summoning up Divine Vigor and boosting her constitution. Then she throws herself into opening the sliding hatch.

Before they try to open it, Pen insists that Nadia put on her new, magically imbued vest. They both realize that wearing the vest will boost Nadia's power to turn, or even destroy, the wraiths. Nadia can feel a difference the moment she puts the vest on - she feels more at ease and confident for some reason, although deep down, she is still anxious about what will happen when they finally encounter the wraiths. While the rest of the group works on sliding back the hatch, Nadia takes a small pouch of silver dust and sprinkles the contents around on the upper deck. She also pokes her head back down into the hold through the first hatch they opened, and tosses a few pinches of the dust down there too. Then she returns to the group to help with the sliding hatch. She'll be the first to look down into the hold from there, and she'll scatter the last of the dust before Consecrating the whole boat to Lathander, Lord of the Morning.

"Its a good idea, but I'm afraid it won't work. Those scrolls contain divine spells. Try as I might, I would never be able to make them work. You or Nadia will have to cast those spells."

It creaks and resists for a long moment before the rollers finally break free of the rust. With a sudden jerk, the roof slides back, almost pitching Nadia and Alex down the stair opening. The stairs are so steep they're more ladder than stairs. And the pitch of the boat makes them steeper yet. There are railings, so it's still possible to climb down them if one is careful. The light from the overcast sky dimly illuminates the area around the stairs and for a couple of feet past their bottom. The smell of damp rot and stagnant water wafts up from below. Crouching down at the top of the stairs on the upper deck, it's now possible to see water lapping at the floor three or four feet beyond the stairs. It's hard to see to the sides, since the cabin walls still make it difficult to get a good viewing angle. The floor at the bottom of the stairs is clear of debris.

Is it her imagination or does the air down there seem colder than it does up here? She certainly feels a chill around her heart. She finishes the Consecration of the boat. "They could be waiting for us just out of sight," she says finally, wishing that she had prepared that spell to detect the presence of undead. If that's the case, she and Pen could be attacked before they even have a chance to try to turn the wraiths. "I want a light," she says, turning to Eber. "Can you lower your lantern down there, or maybe hang it from something? If not, I can cast a Light spell on my shield again."

Bad footing, sloshing water, and a one at a time climb in and out against incorporeal creatures in the dark. Retreat seems practically impossible once we go down there. Especially with this group as no one wants to leave anyone behind. With her fingers and her dagger, Pen tries to probe at the deck boards opposite to the ladder. Can she start prying them up?

It's almost good as new," Penelope points out the obvious in a very dissappointed tone. She is really kicking herself for not tossing a prybar into the wagon at somepoint in her provision gathering. She had thought about outfitting their wagon with useful things like that, but had never gotten around to it. "Eber, do you have any spells that could warp wood or melt the glue and caulk?" "Or, what if we painted lamp oil across the boards and this opening, then lit it on fire and then doused it when the boards were good and weakened. With all this water we can control the fire." Pen gestures that she can use her shield as a scoop.

He then procedes to take his dagger and stab it into the deck on the side of the openning oppisite the stairs. That done, Eber lowers his lantern down into the hold a couple of feet before tying the rope off on the dagger's handle. After stepping back to check the level of illumination in the hold, Eber makes a small adjustment to the lantern's height to improve the lighting and then says, "There, how's that?" "I'm afraid I don't have any spells that'll help," Eber replies to Penelope. "As for weakening the wood with fire, lets make sure we have a few containers of water on hand already before trying it. The last thing we want to do is to burn the whole boat and destroy the wine we came here to retreive."

Pen looks in the wagon and around the ship area for water containers. If she finds none, she'll start bashing holes in the deck in with Nadia's mace. She is really not wanting to send Nadia down into that hold with the wraiths the way it is now and is grasping at straws.

Fire is an option, if they can find some containers to hold water, and if they are very careful. While they gather things together, Nadia decides to go a little way down the ladder, just to look around. Eber's ever-burning lantern is hanging below, shedding a warm glow on the brackish water. She has her shield slung over one arm; she needs both hands to hold onto the ladder, and she goes slowly to avoid slipping. She tests each rung of the ladder with her foot before putting her full weight on it. Halfway down, she stops and looks around.....

To the starboard side of the room is a small galley, or at least the remains of one. A small, rusty stove rests on clay bricks. A pipe leads from the stove to a vent in the deck above. There are broken crates and barrels nearby and behind the ladder. Cabinets line the starboard wall. To the port side Nadia can see a chart case and the broken remains of a table and chair. Just a little ways past the foot of the stairs the water laps at the floor. The last four feet or so of the cabin below decks is completely submerged in dark, oily looking water. In the light of the lantern it has a yellowish-brown cast to it. The top of the captain's bunk sticks just out of the water. Its length lies along the stern wall from the port side corner to a little ways past the centerline. If there are any wraiths down there, at the moment they are well hidden.

"Just what you might expect to find in the hold of a ship such as this," she comments. "Er, right?" She looks around at the others who might have more experience with boats. "And no wraiths to be seen. But maybe my eyes just couldn't see them. They are said to be like shadows, and the light down there is dim."

"A single spark could set fire to the oil in the hold and then we'd never be able to control it." Thinking a bit, Eber peers through the ladder at the broken crates that Nadia had seen. "Enaborem did say that the wine would be in crates, didn't he? Hmm... How much do you suppose a bottle of wine would weigh?"

"Then before we go into the hold, let me try something," Eber replies. Moving around a bit, Eber positions himself so as to provide as clear a view of all the crates as possible. Then, speaking a quick phrase in Draconic, Eber points at the lid of the closest crate and slides it off, revealing the contents inside. Pointing at the diffrent contents, he then slowly brings them up to the deck one at a time. Once the first crate it empty. [OOC: In case you haven't figured it out, Eber's using mage hand. Only one casting should be necessary as it has a duration of concentration, provided he doesn't get interupted.]

There is a hint of stenciling on it that looks promising. It could be part of a bunch of grapes. Anyway, he concentrates on the lid and casts his mage hand spell to move it over. It slides off the top of the crate and Eber let's it drop to the floor. Eber is rewarded to see the straw filling and the glint of lantern light off glass. It looks like there may be bottles nestled within the crate. Another round of concentration brings one of the glass objects up through the hatch opening and into his hands. Yes! It is indeed a bottle of wine. The crate has protected the bottles well and the label is as legible as the day it was printed. The appelation shows that it is one of the dry white Cedarspoke vintages. Eber still has power enough for one more cantrip today. He concentrates one more time and brings up a second bottle.
