"Alright. I'll go first and see if a person draws them out of their shadows," Pen says giving the ladder a shake to test it herself and then taking out the wand. She zaps herself, Nadia and Rolf then puts it away and starts the climb down into the hold. She peers around her to detect for evil while she is still in the sunlight.

Penelope climbs down into the captain's cabin. She senses evil emanating from the area of the map case on the ship's port side and from the submerged corner on the ship's starboard side at the stern.
Her foot touches the slippery deck at the base of the stairs. The canted deck makes it hard to keep her footing but she manages. Keeping the evil auras in front of her, she starts to step to the side in order to let Nadia come down the stairs. She brings her shield around with its holy symbol on it, ready to assist Nadia with her turning. Suddenly, just as Penelope raises her shield, the water erupts into a strange yellowish brown tidal wave. Ordinary water splashes everywhere, but the tidal wave seems to be holding its form. It rushes towards Penelope, slamming into her. She fends off the strange, gelatinous mass with her shield. Echos of deep-throated laughter can be heard coming from the corners of the cabin. |

"There's something else down here," Pen exclaims in surprise to everyone still above. "The water is attacking me! And, I can see and hear the wraiths now."
"An ooze!" Eber exclaims as he sees the 'wave' that breaks on Penelope's shield. Thinking back to Enaborem's disfigured face, a new explination for it occurs to him. Have we been tricked? Knowing that his magic missles will serve their best use against the wraiths, Eber does his best to locate one in the hold and cast his spell but so far the wraiths are staying out of sight. "Out of the hold!" Eber calls to Penelope, "Your weapons can't harm the ooze!" "Don't come down. I'm coming up," Pen hollers up in disgust. Rolf is surprised at the sight of the Ochre Jelly. He recognizes it for what it is, but it isn't until Eber shouts out that he remembers weapons are ineffective against it. Damn, this is going from bad to worse! Turning to Nadia, he surprises her with his action and request. "Nadia, please, your shield! If I be needed to go down there, all I can do is defend." And he drops his halberd to the deck of the ship. "What?" Nadia answers the dwarf. "Oh.. sure Rolf, take it." She hands over her shield. Of course the sturdy dwarf has the best chance to stand against the jelly creature. And as long as he stays at the bottom of the ladder in the light, the wraiths will leave him alone. "Watch your footing down there. "Hurry Pen!" she calls down through the hatch. "Rolf is going to go down!" Penelope climbs back out and Rolf, holding Nadias shield in front of himself, climbs down just to the bottom of the stairs. The ooze pulses and tries to slam into this new prey, but Rolf fends it off. |

Rolf grits his teeths, and concentrates on keeping the ooze from landing a telling blow, half by using the shield, and half by not being where the ooze strikes.
I'm the only one who can hurt that thing, Eber realizes as he watches Rolf take up Nadia's shield and hold it off. Better make this quick. A quick exclamaition in Draconic later, while crumbling a shaving of licorice root with his fingers, and the world around Eber seems to slow down, taking on an almost lethargic appearence. Quickly, Eber steps to the top of the stairs and fires off set of energy hammers at the ooze below. Three missles of force slam into the ochre jelly creature. It writhes and tries to surge up the stairs over Rolf. He knocks it back with his shield. His armor protects him from the flesh-eating acid of the slimy creature. Eber sends down missle after missle with almost demonic speed. Parts of the creature begin to wither and flake off. Eber sends his last magic missle down into the hold. The ochre jelly writhes in pain, unable to bring much of its body to bear in its attacks on Rolf. But it hangs on by a pseudopod. It makes another half-hearted attempt to slam Rolf, but it's almost impossible for the weakened creature to get past his defenses. |

"Damn!" Eber exclaims as the ooze takes his last magic missile and still fights on.
"I'm out of magic missiles," he calls out, making an effort to speak as slowly as the others move, "Get out of there Rolf. We have to find some other way of dealing with it. The rest of you, back away from the opening." Hearing Eber's suggestion, Rolf shrugs. Why not, it's worth a try. Carefully, he goes up the steep stairs, hoping the silly ooze follows him. At first the enraged and damaged ooze starts to lunge toward the retreating dwarf, but a disembodied voice calls out from the corner of the ship. Down, Fido. Heel. The ooze slithers back down and slinks into the water again. |

A Nasty Surprise - Round 6

Alex is as surprised as the rest to hear a voice coming from inside the ship. Either there's someone down there, or...
He turns to Eber. "I'll be right back." He nods back toward the herb shop. "Gotta go check something out." With that, he starts running back toward the shop - intent on seeing whether the wizard there is actually up to more than he seems. Nadia can't believe that the jelly listens to commands from the wraiths. She is angry about wasting the Consecrate spell, and angry that there are two undead down there that she can't get to. Eber had mentioned using a Fireball spell before, but hesitates to use it because of the oily water and dry straw packing material in the crates. Rolf suggests using a single torch, which Pen has ready. "All right," Nadia says. "Fire should hurt it, and I think it is weakened enough that it will not be able to split into many new oozes. "I will go down. As soon as the jelly is dead I want to try to turn the wraiths. Pen, do you want to come down with me now, or wait?" Pen shakes her head at Nadia, "I'll keep the torch. I can grip it while I hold my shield." She follows the cleric into the hold, her second descent, and prepares to aid Nadia in her turning. She uses her detect evil to spy out the evil auras. "Theyre still here she whispers trying to focus on them again. As Nadia and Penelope head down into the hold to try and finish off the ooze and take on the wraiths, Eber is forced to back off from his fireball. As he puts away his bat guano, however, his hand brushes up against a gum arabic encased eyelash and an idea occurs to him. Pulling it out, Eber casts the associated spell and disappears from sight. "Make a little room for me to get by," Eber calls softly down the stairs to Nadia and Pen, as he readies himself to move quickly, a feat which will be fairly easy while hasted. The wraiths continue to keep away from the sunlight and out of sight. The wounded ooze hugs the bottom of the boat keeping itself under the water. |

A Nasty Surprise - Round 7

Rolf stands at the top of the stairs, with nothing much he can do, other than make sure he is ready to act if the need arises. So, both hands on his halberd, he watches for anything out of the ordinary.
Nadia is startled to hear Eber's disembodied voice above her on the ladder. Things are pretty close down here in the hold, but she does her best to 'make room' for the dwarf. She peers around at the cabinets, the little galley stove, the captain's bunk, and the brackish water. There's no sign of the jelly, or the wraiths. "I cannot see them, Pen," she says in a low voice. "Are you sure they are here?" Yes Penelope whispers back, she gestures with her sword toward the areas where she was able to pinpoint the source of evil emanations before. They probably want us to step away from the light, Nadia thinks. So they must be watching to see what we do. With that in mind, she takes up her holy symbol and steps forward, turning slowly around, looking carefully for any shadow that might be a wraith. As soon as she leaves the circle of light, a disembodied, cackling laughter erupts around them. The shadowy figure of a man rises out of the water at the back corner of the boat. He appears to have a heavy beard, is wearing ragged clothes and has a bandana around his head. But Nadia and Penelope are ready from him. They both lift up their holy symbols and begin to pray. "Flee, spirits of darkness! In the name of Lathander, Lord of the Morning!" Nadia calls out, her voice full of command and confidence. Perhaps Tyr is not a lover of wine. Or perhaps he doesnt approve of his paladins taking time to rescue bottles of it. For whatever reason, the power he sends through Penelope is very weak. Her shield barely glows. But it doesnt matter. The power of Lathander is strong this morning. Dazzling sunlight pours out of Nadias holy symbol. The wraiths cackling laughter turns to a shriek of frustration and despair as the light rips through its shadowy body. In a moment, it is as if the wraith never existed. The other wraith howls and slides out from the cabinet in which he had been hiding. Another bearded, bandana clad figure slides through the shadows along the wall. Moving quickly, Eber ducks into the hold and heads straight for the case of wine he had opened earlier with mage hand. Picking it up, Eber heads back up the stairs as quickly as he came down. The wraith doesnt pay attention to the strange sight of a crate lifting off the ground and floating away. He is so intent on attacking the cleric who destroyed his haunt mate. He lunges for Nadia, his hand reaching out. He grasps at her chest, his hand going through as if he were trying to grab her very heart. The chill touch freezes Nadia to the bone. The cold around her heart threatens to drain the life out of her. But she steels herself and pulls back, shrugging off the wraiths touch and denying him the sustenance of her life force. The wraith's attack is just the kind of out of the ordinary thing Rolf was waiting for. He practically jumps down into the cabin below decks. He sloshes forward into the water to get room to swing his halberd. It's a mighty blow he delivers to the second wraith, but unfortunately it passes right through it's shadowy body. Meanwhile, out on the road, Alex speeds back towards the herb shop. He reaches the front door. All is quiet around the area. |

A Nasty Surprise - Round 8

Alex quietly opens the door to the herb shop and sneaks inside. It's dark inside. Once his eyes adjust he can see well enough to make out the general shape of things in the front room from the diffuse light coming through the dirty windows. Everything is as they left it. Alex hides in the corner with the broken table and listens. All is quiet.
Back on the ship, Nadia realizes that Penelope doesn't have a weapon she can use against the wraith. But Pen does have a scroll of magic weapon somewhere in her backpack. If she can just get to it. "Here, Pen. Take this. I'm going to try to get one of those scrolls out of your pack." Nadia hands the enchanted mace off to Penelope. The two of them switch places quickly and Nadia starts rummaging in Pen's pack for the scroll. Penelope hefts the mace and takes a quick swing with it. She's a little off-balance and the blow misses the wraith completely. Up on deck, Eber breaths a sigh of releif as the world around him speeds back up to its normal pace. He gently puts down the case of wine and replaces the two bottles that he had pulled out earlier within it. He then quickly counts the bottles to make sure the case is full before calling out to those in the hold, "Seeing as I'm out of any useful spells, I'll let you handle what's down there if you want to. We've got the wine, however, so feel free to pull back anytime." Back down in the hold, the wraith aims a blow at his newest attacker. The dwarf's halberd came close that last time. The wraith made himself incorporeal just in time. He reaches out to grab at Rolf, but Rolf is too quick. He dodges out of the way of the wraith's cold touch. Well at least there's only one of them now.. Hoping to finish up the threat quickly, Rolf takes another swing at it. His halberd swings true again, but once more the wraith makes himself substanceless just as the weapons slices through his space. |

Alex stays absolutely still, straining to hear anything. But everything is quiet except for the sound of the wind gusting outside and the creaking of the sign as it's blown back and forth.
Pen continues to attack the bandana wearing wraith with Nadia's magic mace. It's a weapon with heft and for bludgeoning. It's quite a bit different than her slicing longsword. She has to consider that last one a practice swing. And it was good practice. This swing is right on target. The wraith is concentrating on Rolf and doesn't blink out of the material plane fast enough. The magic properties of the mace tear through its being. It howls and whirls towards Penelope. Nadia's fingers can't move quickly enough as she fumbles to grab one of Pen's scroll and unroll it. They manage the job though finally and Nadia intones the words of the spell, enchanting her saber. The enraged wraith reaches out for Penelope, plunging it's hand into her chest. She feels the same cold and life-draining pain that Nadia felt. But like Nadia, Penelope is able to steel herself against the parasitic attack. It hurts but she still feels strong enough. Rolf grits his teeth. Stupid thing.. Won't you become solid for a second and let me hit you? Getting frustrated by his two misses, Rolf attacks the wraith once again. But still, the wraith manages to be someplace else when Rolf's halberd comes slicing through. |

Pen is a bit shaken up seeing the phantom hand sink into her chest and try to drain her of life. She shakes off the deadly chill that seems to freeze her heart for a beat. This evil creature must be destroyed! She attacks it again with her mace, hoping that her luck continues and it she connects with a corporeal moment.
Nadia sees the color drain from Penelope's face as the shadowy form of the wraith's hand plunges into her chest. Thankfully, her friend is strong enough to withstand the attack on her spirit. This time. "Curse you!" she yells at the wraith, and slashes at it with all her might..... Their gods are guiding their weapons with unerring accuracy today. The wraith turns one way and the other as first Penelope and then Nadia. Swing their weapons. Penelopes mace smashes through the shadowy figure, once again disrupting the fabric of its being. Nadias sword flashes, slicing through the middle of the wraith. The extra power she put behind the blow surges in through the magic properties imbued by the spell cast on the saber. A wake of turbulence in the wraiths form follows the path of the sword. Vortexes of mist grow bigger and bigger. The wraith lets out one final shriek as its ripped apart, the shadowy mist evaporating into nothingness. |

Seeing the wraith get destroyed as first Penelope, then Nadia hits the thing with their enhanced weapons, Rolf ruefully shakes his head.
"Well, 'tis a good thing this old dwarf has thou two lasses looking over meself, eh?" With a chuckle, he leans his halberd on the side of the wall, and looks over the contents of the hold, trying to figure out what needs to be brought up. "One of us should keep an eye out for that ooze while the others bring stuff up, methinks." |

The vortex of dark vapor and the shriek of destruction make a strong impression in Penelope. She's finally done some proper Paladin work.
"I'm on that right now," Pen says and manuevers herself to be in between her allies and the ooze. She holds the torch out in front of her. The two of them can look through the cabinets and the crates and she'll be guard and buffer should the ooze try attacking again. Who knows what it will do now its handlers are destroyed. Pen almost says, "Stay down boy." |

Nadia is too breathless and stunned to say anything for a moment. The euphoria of seeing Lathander's holy Light tear into and destroy the first wraith had quickly given way to absolute horror at the deathly cold touch of the second wraith. It had come so close to overwhelming her strength of mind; she had felt its icy shadow-fingers so near to her heart! If she hadn't had her faith in Lathander's supreme might to support her, she might well have quailed in the face of such evil.
It didn't hurt to have her two most stalwart friends fighting beside her either! She manages to smile at Rolf's wry comment, and laugh along with him. Then she lets out a little victory whoop. "Yah-ha! Nice shot, Penny! Did you hear how it shrieked at the end?" I wonder what happens to its life-force, or un-life, or whatever, now?" the cleric in her can't help wondering. She agrees with Rolf that they should explore the rest of the hold and bring as much stuff up as they can. Penelope has the torch, so she keeps an eye on the ooze. Nadia hollers up the ladder: "Hey Eber! Do you want to come down and look around? Where is Alex? Is he still up there?" |

Some instinct for self-preservation works strongly within the ochre jelly. It stays under the water, shrinking back into the deepest, darkest part of the partially sunken cabin.
Penelope, Nadia and Rolf search through the rest of the crates and cabinets. Of all the easily accessible things, only the wine appears to be of any value. The rest of the crates are filled with the rotten remains of food, or moldy clothes. The maps in the map case have long ago succumbed to the ravages of damp and mildew. The only thing remaining in the cabin that looks like it might be of some interest is an old, locked strongbox that rested under the table next to the map case. |

Nothing but silence. After a few seconds, Alex is satisfied. I guess it wasn't this guy after all. Whose voice was that, then? One of those wraiths? Somehow I didn't think they would be able to speak.
He steps carefully back out of the house, being careful not to be noticed, and, once out of earshot, begins running back to the boat. Well, the undead aren't really my thing anyway. I just hope everyone's alright... When he arrives, he notices a distinctly relaxed party and the case of wine already retrieved from the hold. "Did everything go alright?" he asks to make sure. He has to smile at Nadia's enthusiastic description of the girls' successes against the wraits, and at Rolf's sardonic smile. "Well, that's a relief. I guess it's possible that you all can be trusted without my expert guidance. I was just checking out our handsome benefactor to make sure he wasn't trying to double-cross us. I didn't notice anything odd." |

When the hold has been thoroughly searched and it is time to climb back out of the boat, Pen is almost dissappointed that the oozey creature left them alone. She would like to finish it off, but has no reason to go and provoke it to come out of it's wading pool.
On one hand, the creature could very well harm an innocent if left here to recover. On the other, she is supposed to show mercy. Pen is flummoxed about what is the exact right thing to do in this situation. With an exasperated sigh, she climbs up out of the hold. This isn't the first time the Code has contradicted itself and she is sure it won't be the last. |

"Finding nothing odd does not necessarily mean that everything is well," Eber reminds the others, "I have heard tell of wizards so degenerate that they form a bond with oozes. Placing them where people would least expect them and using them as pets. Of course the oozes themselves are not intelligent so this sort of bond can leave on a little lonely."
"But anyway, the reason I mention it is because I've heard that these wizards sometimes begin to resemble the oozes they bond with and it occured to me that Enaborem's face may not be due to an injury as I first assumed. At the very least we should be most cautious when we go back to deal with him again. He may be an honest enough fellow, but its not like there is anyone here that can vouch for him." |
