"Are you saying that that jelly creature down there might be Enaborem's pet?? What sort of bond are you talking about anyway?" She can't imagine having a relationship with an ooze. A horse, yes. A dog, yes. A toad..... maybe. Well alright, yes to toads too. These creatures can be smart and friendly. They can be trained, and seem to like working with people. How could you ever even know what an ooze is thinking? "But why would he keep the thing here on this boat? And why have it attack us when we were his only chance to retrieve the wine?" Unless he really doesn't care about the wine. Maybe he just wants us dead so he can take our valuables. But he hadn't been the one trying to make a deal in the first place. So far, Nadia is skeptical of Eber's idea.

Well, I think I might just try for that blue finger. Point me at it." His gloves removed and tools in hand, Alex has begun his exploratory inspection of the box to ensure that it isn't trapped before he attempts the lock when Eber explains his theory about wizards and oozes. Alex can't help but chuckle out loud at the idea. "Well, Rolf," he says, keeping his eyes fixed on their search, "maybe you're right about wizards after all. I guess they all find a way to go crazy sooner or later." Nothing yet. Better check these hinges too. "Hey, Eber - you aren't starting to feel a strange affinity for bugs or mushrooms or anything, are you?"

Seeing two men go crazy is not enough to convince you? Granted, one was an elf, but still.. At least Eber is a dwarf, he might last a tad longer.. Rolf decides to keep those thoughts to himself, and watches Alex work. Sure, the work might very well have been learned doing rather.. Unsavory things, but Rolf is a craftsman at heart, and he can recognize skill for what it is. And Alex definitively got some skills..

He does indeed find the remains of some sort of needle trap on the box, but it's so rusted that the mechanism doesn't even work and the tip of the needle is broken off. That's not going to be a problem. The lock mechanism is a little tougher for Alex, though, because of the rust. A few drops of oil help things along and eventually he gets the tumblers to drop and the latch to open. Now it's just a matter of opening the cover. Again, the hinges are so rusted that even with it unlocked it's difficult to open. Rolf lends a hand and, finally, they are able to pry up the lid. It's worth the trouble. Inside they find 430 gold pieces, 125 silver pieces and a gold ring with a black opal.

Picking the chest up, he waits for someone to pick up the case of wine. "Well, back to see that crazy man then, eh? Let us see what else he has to tell us, I suppose." Leading the way off the boat, he starts out in the direction of the Herb Shop, intending to leave the chest in the wagon on the way.

Nadia is thinking about what it would be like to have your face start to become ooze-like when the lid finally gives way on the strongbox Alex is working on and creaks open on its rusty hinges. Her eyes gleam as Alex scoops up a handful of gold coins and lets them fall tinkling back into the box. "Ah ha!" she says with excitement. Perhaps stopping here in Nulb will turn out to be worth it afterall. They can trade that wine for information about the rest of the town, and even if they decide to leave right after that, they will have gained a small chest of coins. And a ring! At least they are making a start at collecting enough to pay back the debt they owe in Rastor.

Maybe Enaborem went invisible and is standing right around here if he's the voice controling the ooze monster. We'll see what's what when we go back to deliver the wine I suppose. She knows exactly what Rolf is thinking...another mage gone nutter definately supports his theory about arcane magic users. After standing silently out of the way while Alex concentrates on picking the box and prying the rusty container open, Pen then recounts for him what he missed. She thinks he should be interested. She especially tries to explain what happened after Nadia tore the undead spirit apart with her mace. "It was like a swirling black cloud that turned into this tiny tornado that spun itself out with a shriek. It was quite a sight." When the chest is open and the contents revealed, Penelope picks up the ring to look it over carefully for design or words on the band. "My mum once told me that wearing an opal, if it isn't your birthstone, brings bad luck. You have to be born in Hammer to wear an opal. I know it is just a superstition, but now that bit of motherly advice is stuck with me and I'll never be able to wear an opal without discomfort. My gemstone is an emerald, since I was born in Mirtul." She tosses it back into the box. "Is it magic that you can see Eber?"

Bringing those two bottles of wine up earlier used up the last of my flexibility for the day. I could still cast a fireball or an invisibility but neither of them will tell me if the ring is magical," Eber replies. "As for the kind of bond, well its hard to describe. Oozes aren't exactly intelligent creatures. In fact they have about the intelligence of a door knob. Still some wizards find them fascinating and in their fascination become more like them. I guess it would be more accurate to say that they imitate oozes rather than bond with them."

He glances around at the gloomy buildings that surround them. "Although I have a feeling I'll have a chance to see it again before we're done with this place." Alex helps Rolf lift the strongbox onto the wagon. Then, he begins putting bottles of wine into his backpack. "Alright, here's what we'll do. We give Mr. Ooze in there 5 bottles of wine, and tell him the rest are going with us. If his information proves reliable enough to keep us alive, he'll get the other 4 bottles. I can keep them in my pack, or we can spread them around. "Any objections?"

The deal was that if they brought him a case of wine from the hold of the ship that he would tell them about the rest of the Nulb inhabitants. "I cannot go back on my words," Pen declares in the same soft voice. But, as softly spoken as it is her voice is final. She will offer no compromise.

But he's been flinging lots of magic around today, and can't do a detect spell. "Let me see it," Nadia says, taking the ring back out of the strongbox. She concentrates for a moment on seeing the magic inherent in the ring (if there is any) and mutters a spell.

She is impressed with the quality of workmanship on it, however. If nothing else, it will help them finish paying off the halflings in Rastor. Nadia tosses the ring back into the strongbox. The group makes its way back to the herb shop. All is still quiet, just as Alex found it before. It's dark inside again. Eber and Rolf spot a piece of paper lying on the counter held down by an old clay jar. On it is written the following note: "If you're reading this you've probably taken care of those pesky wraiths. Please don't disturb my sleep. Nulb is not the place one cares to lie unconscious in bed at night. Leave the wine on the counter and come back after 3 this afternoon. PS. Probably best you avoid the Inn. Nothing else around here is as dangerous as that place."

"We do not intend to cheat him, Pen. He will get all the wine we recovered from the boat if he does not betray us by giving false information. "But really Alex, how can we know for sure if he does betray us? It is possible that he may not know everything about the undead here.... " Back inside the shop they find the note. "So he sleeps during the day," Nadia mutters after reading it. "What are we going to do until 3 o'clock?"

He doesn't seem like he'd mind all that much if we died here - but he'd mind a little more if he lost some of his precious wine when we did."

If he is a wizard, he could have brought them up one at a time the way I brought up the first two. Certinaly it might have taken a few days, but what are a few days in a place like this all alone."

"How would he have opened that sliding hatch all by himself anyway? It was rusted pretty tightly shut. "Well, I think I will wait outside with the wagon. There is no sense in risking ourselves until we talk to the man and hear what he can tell us about this place." Nadia goes back outside to wait, spending some time at first taking care of the horses. Then she finds a comfortable spot in the cart and ....... waits.

At the bottom of the note, he quickly scribbles: "Consider this a down payment. We have more, which we may be willing to part with based on the quality of the information you give us." He then walks back outside, hoping Pen won't push him too much on the "letter of the agreement". "So, Nadia," he says softly, approaching the cleric as she brushes down one of the horses, "what was it... like? Channeling power to destroy those wraiths? Did it hurt?"

She continues to brush Levka, but a bit more slowly than before. Alex has just about decided that she will say no more about the experience when she stops the rhythmic brushing and stands absolutely still, looking down at her hands. "It was ..... incredible, Alex. I do not know if I can even describe it." She gazes up at the overcast sky. Perhaps it is only a stray sunbeam streaming through the clouds, but it seems that Nadia's face is bathed in a golden light. Or maybe it is the radiance of her beatific smile. "It was like ..... like I was filled with a clean and wholesome light. And it just ... burst out of me and stabbed into the wraith, tearing it to pieces. It was beautiful! "Alex, the power of Lathander ........." She looks over at her friend, eyes shining with devotion. "Every day I feel it more strongly than before. It truly is a wondrous gift!" She is quiet again, thinking .... remembering. The light seems to dim, along with her smile, and she walks around Levka to stand by Alex. "The other wraith ... the one that we had to destroy with our weapons ........." Nadia shakes her head and shudders as if with a chill. "It attacked me, and Pen too. It... it touched me - I felt it reaching for my heart... as cold as death ..... No, even colder. I have never felt such hatred or such evil. "I would hate to meet anything like it again. But here in Nulb ...... I fear there may be worse things."

It doesn't -look- comfortable, but then the dwarf is used to waiting and standing in his armor by now.

Alex and Nadia stand guard out by the wagon, talking quietly. Eber, Rolf and Penelope settle down to wait in the store front area. Everyone tries to pass the time as best they can. Around midday they rumage through their packs to pull out another dismal trail-ration lunch. They eat quickly and with little enjoyment. Three more hours to go... The sky stays dark all day. The unseasonal chill in the air hangs on. Early in the afternoon a light rain begins to fall mixed with sleet. It doesn't last long, but it leaves Alex and Nadia even colder than they were before. The wind continues to blow. They hunker down. The sky grows even darker. The broken buildings cluttering the town seem strewn around the area like the discarded remains of some ancient celebration of titans. Through the shadows, three small creatures flit about on leathery wings. Drawn by the scent of living blood, they fly from shadow to shadow towards the old herb shop. There! One of the creatures sees two humans standing outside the shop near a horse-drawn wagon. He calls to his mates. The three creatures surge forward, wings flapping. Suddenly, Alex and Nadia are confronted by the bat-like creatures. As the creatures descend on them, Alex and Nadia can see, to their horror, that the creatures are more like hideously distorted human heads with wings and glowing green eyes. One of the creatures opens its mouth wide, distending it far beyond what would seem possible. It lets out a terrible shriek. The shriek fills Alex and Nadia with unbearable fear. Nadia pulls herself together and reaches for her weapon but Alex is so paralyzed by fear that he can't move. The other two creatures attack. One attacks Alex, the other Nadia. The second creature sinks its fangs into the paralyzed Alex. He feels its poison spreading through his veins. The third creature bites Nadia, too. She manages to fight off the effects of its poison, at least.
