Oh.. So those were old wounds. That's good. I was under the impression you had forgotten to describe some nasty attack or something.

So, how do we fight this ooze? First, is it an ochre jelly and can Nadia tell that's what it is? Second, if it is an ochre jelly, do we all know about its 'split' ability?

Hmm. Nobody in the group has an appropriate Knowledge skill for me to roll.
Let me do a straight INT check; DC 15 to see if anyone can recognize the type of ooze and DC 20 to know about it's characteristics... Alex - 7+2 = 9; nope Rolf - 16+1 = 17; recognizes ochre jelly Nadia - 17+0 = 17; recognizes type Eber - 18+4 = 22; recognizes type, knows its characteristics Penelope - 5+1 = 6; nope |

Wow, Rolf did better then me.
Edit: Geebus. BP, you might want to do your spells on the ooze. Heck, on second thoughts, we might wanna get out of there, I don't think we can actually kill it. They really should make beer-scented candles. -Barak, while attending a candle-selling party. |

That's interesting. I don't always look things up in the MM unless I'm pretty sure Nadia will know what the monster is. I probably shouldn't have looked this one up... I don't know why I did.
Anyway, only Eber knows about the 'split' ability. He really needs to warn the rest of us before we do something that we'll all regret! |

You'll note that he's stated that weapons won't work against it. Its up to you to have your characters react to that warning.
Unfortunately most everyone acts before Eber. Black holes are where God divided by zero. |

I didn't see that you had edited your post until after I made my last post. We have all been warned now.
By the way, Pen says she can see the wraiths... Can she? I didn't get that impression from David's post. Or does she mean that she can see their evil auras? |

Yeah BP, David ruled we can pretty much speak whenever. Which, well, makes more sense. And I'm sure villains will appreciate that at some point in the game.

Re: Nulb - OOC 2 | ||

Oh, we can kill the jelly, it'll just require the use of magic or energy based attacks (but not electricity).
Anyone have EWP(Torch)? What really bugs me is that with good damage rolls on his magic missles Eber could take out either the wraiths or the ooze, but not both. His fireball could do a fair amount of damage to the ooze (and maybe the wraiths if they were exposed), but dropping a fireball into the boats hold could very well start a fire we won't be able to put out. Opinions, comments, suggestions? Black holes are where God divided by zero. |

Re: Nulb - OOC 2 | ||

I'm more worried about the jelly than the wraiths. I don't think any of the rest of us have anything that can hurt the jelly. If Pen doesn't get out of there, it could get a hold of her and keep her there. We pretty much can't do anything about the wraiths until the jelly is taken care of.
Anybody else? edit: By the way, there were several things that I said Nadia would do before we went down in the hold. Did these things get done? - use Bless bead - cast Guidance - cast Magic Weapon on Rolf's halberd And Pen was going to use the Protection from Evil wand. |

Re: Nulb - OOC 2 | ||

Of course I have comments
I really think Eber should concentrate on the ooze. Even with the 50%, Rolf can do as much damage on the wraiths in two rounds then Eber can with two MMs. Eber, however, can hurt the ooze much more effectively then anyone else. Secondly, I don't think Fireball would catch the boat on fire. It really only make stuff burn that is made to burn, like oil. Not wood. It's a bit silly, but it's like that. Thirdly.. I'm not sure we can kill the ooze. It has a nice amount of HPs. How much damage can Eber do, on average, to it? Re: Nulb - OOC 2 | ||

To be clear, Penelope can't see the wraiths directly, but she knows their (initial) locations from their evil auras.
Also, the way I interpret "weapons deal no damage" is that this refers to slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning attacks. Elemental damage, other than electricity, will damage it as normal. (edit) I'll make a note that Nadia cast those spells while Penelope used her Prot from Evil wand. |

Re: Nulb - OOC 2 | ||

His average MM damage is 10.5 per casting. With 5 spells prepared thats 52.5 points of damage (max 75, min 30). His fireball will do 17.5 points of damage on average (min 5, max 30).
Orche Jellies have an average of 60 hp, so on average Eber should be able to take it out. Worst case scenario is that he only deals 35 hp of damage and it has 87 hp. Best case scenario is that the fireball and a single casting of magic missle deal 45 points of damage and the jelly has 33 hp. I'm guessing we'll get something closer to the average. And Crito, can you confirm Barak's interpretation of the effect fireball will have on the wood of the boat? Black holes are where God divided by zero. |

Re: Nulb - OOC 2 | ||

The spell description says that it will damage items and cause "combustibles" to catch on fire. I'd say that J-F was essentially correct. Paper, tinder, oil, fine powder in the air, those kinds of things are "combustibles". A thick plank or log of wood won't catch fire from a short burst of flame like that from a fireball. Of course, if there is combustible material around that does catch fire, it could spread to the wood.
Things to consider about using fireball then: Why did the water appear oily? The main target is in a pool of water. The floor (at least) of the entire area is damp. The now open crate under the stairs contains exposed straw packing material which could act like tinder. Is it dry or is it damp? |

Re: Nulb - OOC 2 | ||

Yeah, I definately don't think the fireball is a good idea in this case.
What say you all to Eber pounding all his magic missles into the jelly and we take the two bottles of wine we've retrieved so far back to Enaborem as a sort of down payment? I want to talk to that guy again anyway (particularly to find out if he knew about the jelly). We could then come back on the marrow after Eber has had a chance to prepare a whole new batch of magic missles and finish off the jelly (which won't have had the opportunity to heal) and take on the wraiths. Black holes are where God divided by zero. |

Yikes. Well, I don't know how much good Alex is going to be in this encounter. I suppose he can try to hurl insults at the ooze until it gets angry and lowers its guard.
As for the first round, I can't think of anything for Alex to do given that he has to leave the stairs open for Nadia and or Rolf. I think he'll just wait for the moment. |

Re: Nulb - OOC 2 | ||

Eber should at least try to kill the thing. I don't suppose there is any way to boost the damage of the magic missiles? One problem I see though is, why would the jelly stay where we can see it if it keeps getting pounded by magic missiles?
Maybe Pen should hang in there for one (or two) round(s) while Nadia climbs down for a turning attempt. That is probably a crazy idea..... Can Nadia climb down and turn in the same round? Aiding Nadia's turn would not draw an AoO, right? No. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure that Nadia won't risk making Pen stay down there. She'll delay until after Pen's turn. What about this? Pen comes back up. Eber can fire away with MMs. Pen gets the SLIPPERS OF SPIDER CLIMB and Nadia drinks the SPIDER CLIMB potion that Alex has, then we two hang from the ceiling to try to turn the wraiths? There's another crazy idea...... |

Re: Nulb - OOC 2 | ||

i had almost the same idea. Except for we stay outside. You know how Nadia put her head in to look around. What if we lay down on the decks then slid forward and put our heads and torso's into the room with Rolf and Alex holding on to our belts to make sure we don't fall in.
Then the ladies try turning the wraiths as many times as we can until they are turned our we are out of turning. Then Eber magic missiles up the ooze. then we get that case of wine! and drink it...i mean trade it for information you know he knew about the ooze. but let's not get mad at him for that until AFTER we get him to tell us as much as he would tell us |
