That's right. I always forget that a ring or protection provides a deflection bonus, not an armor bonus. So it does count against touch attacks. Alex's touch AC should be 14 not 13.

Nadia has only gone halfway down the ladder. And she doesn't intend to go any further than that. Let's see what she can see, then she'll come back. If we want to send Alex or Rolf after that, then we can.
I assume that at least the top part of the ladder is still in daylight? |

Re: Smashing the deck | ||

Correct. And as you can see from my post, I assumed Nadia would stay within the daylight area.

Oily water? What from? Does Nadia think that the oily water increases the odds that we could lose control of the fire?
Does any of the stuff she sees down there look like it might be the wine we're looking for? Something else to consider besides Touch AC - fortitude saves. Nadia's is +8, and with Protection from Evil, that would be +10, right? The DC to save versus the wraiths Con drain is 14. Those odds sound pretty good, or am I figuring things up wrong again? |

Re: Smashing the deck | ||

Nadia doesn't see anything in particular that would make the water oily. Perhaps one of the crates contains wine or it could be in one of the cabinets.
And your calculations are correct on the Fort save. Nadia would only need a 4 or better to avoid the Con drain. |

Hmm.. I hadn't even realized we got a save against the con drain. Silly me!
Rolf's save is only one less then Nadia (multi-classing is good for saves!). I feel better about taking them on now. They really should make beer-scented candles. -Barak, while attending a candle-selling party. |

Pen's fort save without the vest is +9. W/protection it's 11! So she would need to roll a 3 or less to fail the save and get her con drained. That's not so bad.
Then, shall we start descending and checking out the cabinets and crates? Or, shall we fire up the BBQ..i mean deck? Whatever. I'm just starting to get anxious that we DO something one way or the other. |

Re: Smashing the deck | ||

Yeah. I say those of us with good Fort saves (Pen, Nadia and Rolf) go down below with Prot From Evil up, and start carefully searching. If the wraiths come out, Nadia can try her greater turning, and if that doesn't work, we can take them down. I'd of course greatly appreciate having my halberd magicked...
Edit: Is the bottom of the stairs in the "sunlight"? That'd be great. Eber and Alex could stand there and attack at range safely... They really should make beer-scented candles. -Barak, while attending a candle-selling party. |

Re: Smashing the deck | ||

I know. I want to do something too. If there is no daylight at the foot of the ladder, let's go ahead and smash up the deck as planned. That way at least Eber and Alex come down in the hold while the rest of us try to flush out the wraiths.

Re: Smashing the deck | ||

There is daylight at the bottom of the stairs - enough for one person to stand in. But note the limited amount of fighting space down there. You can only have two people fighting effectively in melee. I think I will allow one additional person on the stairs with a ranged weapon, though.

Well, if we're going to fight, Eber could probably do so from the deck. As long as the wraiths don't have complete cover, Eber's magic missles will strike unerringly.
But before we commit to that course of action, I've another idea. Crito, I need to know exactly how broken up the crates are and how much a bottle of wine might weigh (more or less than 5lbs)? Black holes are where God divided by zero. |

Re: Smashing the deck | ||

The crates below deck appear to be intact. A fine bottle of wine weighs 1.5 lbs.
Nice idea! (edit) And to anticipate the next possible question - a closer look might indicate that the tops of the crates are not nailed down, i.e. they are not sealed shut anymore. |

Re: Smashing the deck | ||

It's a crate full of wraith! Run! Just joking.
It would be just great if we could mage hand the bottles out of the hold. But, Pen's probably going to want to destroy the wraiths somehow anyway. However, we can get more information from the Enaborem first, then work out what we want to accomplish. Hey hey hey, the gang's all here except for studious Rob. |

Look at it this way, if we get the wine off the boat then we can just burn the whole thing to expose the wraiths and take them out.

Oh, I'm just kidding! I mean, I DO want to take out the wraiths (because I think we can do it), but we can try later. Your idea is a good one!

Re: Smashing the deck | ||

Well I dunno about that. It's not like the wine has to be the only valuable thing in there.
