I figured that I was being vauge and used the ToEE reference in an attempt to smoke out the wizard's allegience.
You'll note, that Eber didn't correct the man's assertion of their being only two people.
As for the declerations about the magic, consider them a warning. Eber is implying that he is also a wizard, and therefore the old man shouldn't try to pull any fast ones on Eber.
And I'd like to here any better explanations as for why we would throw a metal figurine to check for traps when we could have just as easily thrown a rock were it not for the scrying capabilities of the bird.
