After realizing that no one was going to tell her which church she owed her fealty, she realizes that she had to make a choice. So, she decides that out of all the Gods, Tyr isn't so bad. She had always especially approved that his church insisted on doling out proper justice (but not enforcing any law that could be proved to be unjust). She spoke with Calmer about it her last evening after sharpening a whole supply room of blades. He gave her some good advice and was fairly helpful in pointing her in the right direction, suggesting that she not send any money through the post because that was risky and offering to draw her up a letter of credit.
Penelope sits down that evening to write a letter to be sent to the nearest temple of Tyr. She learned from Calmer that the closest one was in the town of Cedarspoke. She can't help but put in an extra mention that she is a woman...after all the talk about brotherhoods and romantic interests in females she isn't sure if she is doing some groundbreaking by being Tyr's first Lady Paladin.
After several drafts and a little bit of help from Rolf with some really good sounding words, Pen's letter is complete.
I, Penelope Savage, a woman of 19 years, pledge my sword, heart, and service to the Church of Tyr as a Paladin Knight. I pledge to reveal the Truth, punish the guilty, right the wrong, and always be true and just in my actions. I pledge to uphold the law wherever I go and punish those who do wrong under the law. I pledge to keep a record of my own rulings, deeds, and decision, and through analysis of this any errors may be corrected and my grasp and ability of the law will expand. I will be vigilant in my observation and anticipations so I may detect those who plan injustices before their actions threaten law and order. I will deliver vengeande to the guilty for those who cannot do it themselves.
Penelope also includes a letter of credit that the Church of Tyr in Cedarspoke can draw upon for 50 gold. It's not a fortune, but it is a respectable sum.
She was going to turn all her personal wealth over (caught up a little in the moment), but then realizes she needs to keep something for herself so that she doesn't have to mooch off Nadia or someone else to pay for her lodgings, meals, rations, and daily expenses like that.
