Yes, it's high time, and long overdue, for the Devils part of my FAQ.
And as you may or may not realize, I suck at writing FAQ questions... probably has a lot to do with the fact that I have no idea what your Frequently Asked Questions are.
Sooo..... The floor is open. Ask, and ye shall receive badly spelled nuggets of wisdom from me!
.. wait, was that too egotistical?
Seriously, ask any Devil related question, and I'll do my best to answer it in a satisfactory manner.
Now, on with the show, eh?
It's a little known secret, but... Devils are not the native inhabitants of the Nine Hells. In the Abyss, fully formed Demons are what claw their way from the soil (Though, if one race there isn't native, who can really tell?). Full Yugoloths emerge from Ghenna. Ghereleths emerge freely on Carceri.
But in Hell, where one would expect Lemures to form.. Nupperibos do. The Devils quickly converge on the mobs of Nupperibos the plane generates, and converts them to Their way of thinking.. and into Lemures in the process.
Theoretically, if one could leave a tribe of Nupperibos alone in Hell, they would eventually evolve into the true inhabitants of the plane. Some even say that the True Masters of Hell far exceed the Devil's power levels, and that is why they convert the pudgy beasts as soon as they can.
But.. people talk too much. The only confirmable fact is that Devils are not the native species.
You see.. thousands of years before anything was anything, there were just the four basic forces. No, not Fire, Water, Earth and Air.. Before them.
Good, Law, Evil, and Chaos. Good and Evil fought, as did Law and Chaos. Of course, being abstracts, it's kinda hard to get anything done. So, they began allying themselves. Lawful Good, Chaotic Evil.. you get the point.
Still, they were abstracts, and still couldn't get anywhere. So.. Law drew on it's connections with Good and Evil and created two champions of Law. (One must theorize that champions of Chaos, and perhaps even Good and Evil were created, but if they were, I know not their names.)
The twin serpents, Ahriman, the scaled serpent with the forked tounge, and Jazirian, the feathered serpent were more or less unstoppable when they worked together. Seeing as how the entire existance at that point was pure chaos, energies bouncing off of energies with no rhyme or reason, they decided to change everything.
Taking the other's tail into their mouths, they spun in the chaos, and defined boundaries. The two of them working together created The Outlands, and with Neutrality defined, the other planes formed in a circle around it. Jazirian, being the serpent of Good as well as Law, immediatly wanted Mount Celestial to be the center of existance. Ahriman wanted Hell to rule. In their argument, they let go of each other's tail. Jazirian, having wings, was able to stop her fall, and land safely on Mount Celestial.
Not so with Ahriman. He fell, and crashed through all nine layers of Hell, landing in the bottom a broken, bleeding mess.
Of course, it wasn't a total loss, as from his rapidly flowing blood, Fully formed Pit Fiends and Gelugons sprang. Members of the Devilish race.
(Theory Time)
These new, perfect specimins fought against the native inhabitants of Hell, and managed to subdue them. As a final punishment, they changed the children of the first race, the Nupperibos, into children of Their race, Lemurs.
(/Theory Time)
Ahriman immediatly viewed creation as a mistake. Without a defined center, Chaos could easily take control of the whole mess. But he knew that life had already begun here as well. Knowing that Jazirian would never allow him to unmake what had been made, he hid himself from her. He adopted the guise of a humanoid ruler of Hell, and took a new name : Asmodeus.
Well.. That's one of his names, at least...
