Attacker takes a full round action to hit the person. Auto-crit. The reciever of the blow must make a fort save DC (10 + damage taken) or die automatically. Sneak attack damage included, if applicable.
Does that help? |

I believe that if an ally of the fallen person is adjacent to the hopeful attacker, that you can't do a coup de grace. Yep, there it is on PHB page 133, you provoke an AoO. It also mentions that you can use a bow or crossbow to deliver the coup de grace, but you still have to be adjacent to the defender.
This is where weapons with a x3 or 4 crit come in handy. Basically, it reflects why an axe was an execution weapon of choice, i.e., the person being executed is helpless, and the axe takes care of things quickly. Michelle, the eternal egg "Don't mess with me! I still have all my spells!" |

That's something though... is a tied up person helpless, or just immobile?

you only cant if the AoO from the ally hits you. If he missed you can continue the coup de gras.

If you're immobile, you are helpless. So, as soon as "hold person" or paralysis hits, watch out. Now, for a tied-up person, you might have to get a DM ruling on if the tie-job is good enough to render them helpless, or if they have a reasonable chance of thrashing about or slipping out enough to disrupt a coup de grace.

I didn't know that. | ||

So let me get this straight. If you get hit by an AoO while attempting a coup de grace, you lose the coup de grace?

Actually, I've never heard of losing the CDG from being hit. Perhaps it'd require a concentration check.

You don't lose the Coup de Grace action unless you're knocked unconscious or killed.
Concentration checks are required only for casting Spells and Psionics. Cheers! Merric, the Dreamer-Minstrel

Well since coup de grace requires striking a vital spot, maybe the DM could require a concentration check if the AoO actually do a lot of damage that might affect the aim of the coup de grace.

If Concentration checks are only needed for spells and psionics, then why is it a class skill for monks? I believe Con checks also apply to supernatural or spell-like abilities if they are interruptible by an AoO.

Concentration is required for spell-like abilities, just as it is for spells. The only difference is to use a spell-like ability on the defense the DC is almost always 15.
Supernatural abilities rarely provoke an AOO, and don't require Concentration. "Your human mentality screams for vengeance and thrives on the violence that you say you can hardly endure."

It says on page 72 of the DMG that supernatural abilities cannot be dispelled, are not affected by SR, and -do not- provoke AoOs.

The concentration is because Monks logically must be able to concentrate on things. Also, if a person readies an action to attack the monk if he starts doing something weird, I believe a concentration check would be needed for some of the spell-like abilities (can't remember which ones, right now, but things like Ki healing).
