Can anyone explain how Wisdom has anything to do with being wise?

I mean, really, it seems to have nothing to do with being wise. More like in control of your senses. My friend said "You need to be wise to know its important", but then thats why search skill is based on Int. It should be called like, Perception, or Senses, or something...

I will compare wisdom with intelligence since those are the two usually compared and mixed up.
intelligence is book smart. Can you add, subtract, multiply, divide, figure out pi to 8 decimal points? Do you know the presidents in order? wisdom is common sense, street smarts, ability to think to a conclusion and logical reasoning. Should you jump into the mirky pit after the diamond yuor friend dropped in there? What will happen if you do? as far as "wise" wisdom helps you make wise choices (such as not trying to run across an empty field in front of a castle that is firing arrows at you or not jump into a mirky lake to find a diamond your friend has dropped. taylor Was it a dream where you were standing in sort of sun-god robes on top of a pyramid, and there were hundreds of naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you? |

The way I work these mental stats:
Wisdom - How you preceive the world into your mind. (Input) Intelligence - How you integrate info you already have into new things. (Function) Charisma - How you let the world preceive your mind. (Output) darken Light, is the lack of darkness. |

Wisdom? | ||
|
Wisdom is something that is learned through experience, not taught or read.
Therefore, it is difficult to explain by writing something here. I could tell you what wisdom is, but you wouldn't know it without experiencing it. Perhaps you watched the Matrix. At the beginning, Neo is told he is the one. This is simply a fact to him, thus recalling and understanding it would be a component of Intellegence. But, as Morpheus points out, there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path. Intellegence is knowing the path. Wisdom is walking the path. |

The way I see it, Intelligence is having the information, and Wisdom is being able to use the information.
Spot is keyed to Wisdom because while both the intelligent person and the wise person see exactly the same thing if they look at the same place at the same time, the wise person will be more likely to notice that that spot over there is significant. Search is keyed to Intelligence because an intelligent person will be able to figure out where things are hidden. |

Back in 2e, I used a thing I called a Perception Check
Take the Intelligence and Wisdom ability scores Add them Now divide by two So, Wis 10 and Int 14 would result in Perception 12. Whenever I asked for a Perception Check, you'd roll with the 12 being the score to use. I basically thought of it like this... Say you walk into a room with an ashtray holding a cigar butt that's still smoking. An Intelligent person might think "Ah HA! Our enemy, Dougan, loves to smoke cigars! He must have been in this room!" A Wise person might think "Ah HA! The cigar is still smoldering. Someone has been here recently." Whereas if you put two and two together... "Ah HA! Dougan, our enemy who loves cigars, must have been here recently!" I've put some serious thought into bringing that back... But then, almost all Wis skills would then run off this new score. __________________________________

interesting idea...perception modifiers... but the reasoning probably is to give wisdom balanced importance meta-game-wise.

Re: What is Wisdom | ||

One good use of Wisdom is to give your paladins, clerics, druids, and rangers a way to bring in tactical ideas, puzzle solving lightbulbs, etc. based not on what they may have read in books, but what they know intuitively or by experience. So, your ranger (7 INT, 15 WIS) has seen a lot, but not read history books or botany texts. He can probably still tell you that it's not good to get trapped by a hoard of orcs with your back to a deep, fast river, or to eat mushrooms that you haven't seen before.
It's common sense, personal awareness, experience, and spiritual enlightenment rolled up into a stat. It's sort of like charisma, which could be described as personal magnetism, good looks, ability to stand out, ability to be charming, etc. but might not be all of these. I have a cleric who's fairly naive about the world outside her temple, but due to a quite high WIS, she picks things up fast and is a good judge of people and situations. Keep in mind, most animals have a low INT but decent WIS. This represents animals' sense about danger and ability to hunt or avoid being caught. Hope that helped. hreslingozer, that has to be the best definition of wisdom I've ever heard of yet.

An adventurer comes to a mountainside, spying a cave with smoke issuing forth from it.
The intelligent adventurer figures out that a dragon probably lives in the cave. He is not wise, however, and walks into the cave and is eaten. A wise adventurer comes along, seeing the cave as well. He is not that smart, and so has no clue what is causing the smoke, but knows that it is probably more than he can handle. He goes off to the village to get help and advice. |

Re: What is Wisdom | ||

Wisdom: Intuition, Common Sense, Perception.
Intelligence: Reasoning, Analytical Ability, Retention of Knowledge They are both quite broad. Intelligence is key for search because it is how methodical you can be. Wisdom is wilder, being able to see something out of the corner of your eye stuff. Luck is partly wisdom. Cheers! Merric, the Dreamer-Minstrel

Re: What is Wisdom | ||

Also, look at who uses each score for a good look at their natures.
Wizards use Intelligence. They memorize long, complicated magical formula, and they recite them exactly. For them, spellcasting is an exercise of memory and precision. Clerics use Wisdom. They draw upon deep spiritual insights and "oneness" with their deities. Spellcasting for them is an act of faith, not a recitation of formulae. Intelligence is Logic, Reason, Rationalization. Wisdom is Insight, it is a more fundamental understanding of things. Intelligence lets us know Who, What, Where and When. Only Wisdom can answer Why. Spot and Listen are based off of Wisdom because they represent how "in tune" you are with your surroundings...how perceptive you are. Search is based off of Intelligence because it is more methodical...more logical. Start here, study this space, find what you're looking for. "Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"

wisdom is to do with liveing(animate) things.
int is to do wilith non-living(inanimate) things. spot for critters, search for traps. BIGOT, n. One who is obstinately and zealously attached to an opinion that you do not entertain. |

Re: | ||

One thing I've noticed is that the higher Int is, the lower Wis is. As in the case of the addage "the smarter he is, the less common sense he has." I'm pretty smart (not bragging, this is just for example). However, my common sense is VERY low. I've also noticed that while I can be very observational, in general I'm oblivious to my surroundings. I'm either too deep in thought, or I just plain don't see it / hear it. From my example (and as seen from other people), I've realized that general sensing perceptions are positively correlated with my lack of common sense, and common sense can also be seen as wisdom. So, reversely, senses are linked to wisdom. As to why, see everyone elses very wise answers.

So...Celtic...are you saying I'm stupid then?
Honestly, I wouldn't agree with your statement that Int and Wis are negatively correlated. Say instead that it's rare for someone to have a good stat in both, and as such, when one stands out the other seems poor by comparison. It's just like the case when someone complains that they "suck" because they have a 10 or an 11 in a stat, ignoring the fact that this makes them perfectly average and far from "pathetic". Compared to an 18 Int, a 10 Wis does seem pretty poor, and vice versa. Then again, I've known some people who are both very insightful and very intellectual. And I've known people that don't seem to have much of anything going on between their ears on either level. The scariest by far are those in the latter category who STILL manage to have high Charismas. "Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"

I'll use an old analogy my first DM said all those years ago...
Intelligence tells you it's raining outside. Wisdom tells you to go inside before you catch a cold. |

Intelligence tells you that when your hungover coffee will only make your feel worse.
Wisdom (or the lack thereof) tells you to drink it anyway. |

Intelligence tells you that your fireball will probably be VERY effective against that white dragon.
Your Wisdom tells you that it might not be the best thing to piss off a great white wyrm. Just to give this thread a D&D analogy... Michelle, the eternal egg "Don't mess with me! I still have all my spells!" |
