The arcane archer prestige class has not changed in its own mechanics, but it has changed in the was the mechanics of how archery works, and it should be considered before looking at how to make this class work for you.
- Remember that the enchantment bonuses from bows and arrows no longer stack.
General tactics
An arcane archer is designed to combine combat abilities with spellpower. Be sure to provide access to both throughout your build to take best advantage of both.
The fact that you can instantly grant your arrows a strong bonus means that you can afford to let the +bonus on your bow remain at +1, leaving room for other tasty enchantments.
If you want a full arcane archer build, you have at best 10 levels of your primary spellcasting class and +17 BAB. An arcane archer needs to combine combat prowess and spells, not use one or the other.
Imbue arrow and the far shot feat will let you put spells you want to cast a very long distance away.
You cast spells, so armor is often a bad choice overall. Spend your money on wondrous items and improving your bow. Arrows will always be imbued, so aside from getting special material arrows, they arent worth spending gold on.
Wizard is probably a better choice to qualify for arcane archer with than sorcerer, especially considering that it is a favored multiclass for elves.
How far to take this prestige class?
Arcane archers goodness really only comes from the first two levels: +1 to all spells and imbue arrow. Imbue arrow is an ability that will let you drastically increase the range of many of your spells. Continuing from this point is mostly done for the increasing enhanced arrow ability. The magical arrow abilities are interesting, but whether or not they are more valuable than spells depends on what type of character you would like to build. All of the below builds use full or near-full arcane archer class progression to demonstrate how different builds can make use of the abilities of the arcane archer.
Spell focus and penetration are almost required for arcane archers who want to target opponents with spells, because low level spells are going to be weak at breaking through spell resistance and saves.
What are the basic ways to build an arcane archer?
Arcane archers need to combine skill at hitting the bad guys with arrows with some spellcasting ability. You need to create a build to make the most out of both abilities. You need a good base attack bonus and the ability to cast spells well enough to make up for the losses from each.
- The Divine Archer- Using paladin and sorcerer levels to qualify for arcane archer, an archer who can smite can be a dangerous foe.
- The Miko- A bard/monk/arcane archer who gives a nod to feudal Japanese archer/priestesses.
- The Spellshot- A build designed to go for the highest base attack bonus and spellcaster level with full arcane archer progression.
The Divine Archer
Magic can be a holy force, if applied wisely.
Paladins arent supposed to make good archers, let alone good arcane archers. However, building an arcane archer with a sorcerer could stand the bonuses a paladin could grant. The builds of choice are either paladin 3/sorcerer 7/arcane archer 10 or paladin 5/sorcerer 6/arcane archer 9. The choice of which build to use it up to you. The paladin light build gives you a whole bunch more arcane spells per day and still allows for a +16 base attack bonus, but the paladin heavy build sacrifices one arcane caster level and one level of arcane archer for an extra smite, access to paladin spells, and an extra smite per day, which is always helpful if someone who likes his personal space. Most archers loathe having enemies close with them, but a paladin archer makes for a deadly opponent even in melee. This characters feats should focus on the normal archery feats, but grabbing quickdraw and power attack can mean that you can yank out a greatsword and smite that irritating ogre who just closed with you. This build is, generally speaking, one of the most survivable arcane archer builds, and also offers a good bit of spellcasting ability. Also, the armor is a welcome addition for anyone who hates being hit. In combat, you are more of a close-support archer (until you get far shot). Your character can survive longer in melee than other archers (especially with smite evil), so dont be afraid to get closer to melee than other archers or casters. This build makes for a strong second line character in battles who can melee if needed or sit back and shoot if he can. And with up to seven levels of sorcerer casting under your belt, you have even more versatility.
The Miko
I will cleanse the world of your taint, demon!
The miko build uses bard levels to qualify for arcane archer, combining spells and bardic music with a touch of monk for a more eastern feel. Miko archers in feudal Japan were priestesses who used their bows as part of their healing and purifying rituals. With access to healing and protective abilities, Miko used their skill with a bow to defeat evil and seal demons. Remember that bards cannot be lawful, but an ex-bard loses none of his abilities, and monks who become non-lawful retain their abilities, so the muitliclass is possible. Bard is our choice here because we want to create a character who is a strong support character for the group, and manages to maintain some healing powers in addition to some combat strength and other spells. The build is fairly simple: monk 2/bard 8/arcane archer 10, but it does require an alignment shift. Skills should be taken in knowledge (religion) to build up the holy aspect of the character. The bow feats should be taken early to qualify for arcane archer by level 10. The build finishes at level 20 with a +17 base attack bonus, deflect arrows, stunning fist, wisdom bonus to AC, and 8th level bard spells and bardic music abilities. For feats, improve your archery abilities with then normal feats, and grab others like far shot to get the most out of imbue arrow. For spells, grab defensive, healing, and some enchantment spells, as well as some spells to get use out of imbue arrow (which needs area of effect spells). In combat, your goal is to buff your allies up with your bardic (miko) music. Use your arrows to take out dangerous foes for your allies, and you might want to seal your foes fate. Oh, and if you want to really be historically accurate, all miko were females, but thats up to you.
The Spellshot
The best shot is the finishing blow.
Real artillery strikes from a distance, and the arcane archer allows for just that. This build relies on far shot and the arcane archers imbue arrow ability to pummel the enemy from afar with area of effect spells. The build goes for a combination of high base attack bonus and high caster level. We go with fighter 1/wizard 5/eldritch knight 4/arcane archer 10. This build grants a +17 base attack bonus and a caster level of 8. Alternatively, you can drop the last level of arcane archer to reach maintain a base attack bonus of +17 and a caster level of 9, which isnt bad, especially considering the extra abilities you pick up along the way. Unlike the other two builds, this one is definitely a back-line caster/archer. This character lacks the hit points and staying power to stand up in melee, so stay away from it. Try to stay away from combat to the best of your ability. Use defensive spells to keep out of danger and your offensive spells to defeat enemies. Your role in combat is that of a heavy artillery mage: destroy hordes of foes to the best of your ability. You must take out multiple foes at once, because fighting single tough enemies will be too difficult for you. Your archery can do good amounts of damage, but your spells are lacking in the ability to drop big bad evil guys. The hordes, however, are much easier to take out when you can shoot them from so far away
Conclusion
The arcane archers basic role is to increase the range of your area of effect spells, in addition to giving arcane spellcaster a bit more bite in terms of mundane combat abilities. Use these abilities to your advantage and try to find a balance with this class and the rest of your build, because that is the strength of the arcane archer. Just make sure it fits the build and it should all work out.
