I even had a crack at it during that time, but what I threw together so quickly was rubbish. This time, however, I have created a super-fantastic, by-the-book, XP Calculator that works extremely well. At least I think so. webpages.charter.net/milostar/XPCalc.xls This sheet has space for 10 groups of monsters: # in each group entered in column A, CR for monsters in the group in column B. You also put in the ECL for each character (up to 10) in column D. The actual XP given to each PC is found in column G. Let me know what you think. I think you can make the forumli more generalised than they already are though and take into account things like "cap on maximum xp earnt from a single encounter" and doing things by the book for levels 1 through 3. Definately got to play with this more, I think I might just "cheat" and input the XP table up to say level 40 and CR 40, then use VLOOKUPS. Another aspect to consider, grouping the same CR creatures over lines, since 4 x CR 15 creatures over one line does NOT calculate to teh same result as 2 x CR 15 on one line and 2 x CR 15 creatures on another, when in actual fact they're worth the same in the game (since increasing the number of creatures will ALWAYS increase the XP awarded, what it doesn't do is always change the EL of the group, which has nothing to do with XP)

XP is based on EL, not CR; fighting two seperate groups of two CR 15 creatures at seperate times is not the same as fighting one group of four CR 15 creatures. Check the DMG.

EL determines what sort of challenge a group of creatures will be for a party of any given level - that is the only function of EL. *Quote:* ... 2. For each monster defeated, determine that single monster's Challenge Rating. 3. Use Table 2-6: Experience Point Awards (Single Monster) to cross-reference one character's level with the Challenge Rating for each defeated monster to find the base XP award. ... I don't know what's wrong with you, but I'll bet it's a really big word.
