Posts: 23 (06/03/05 08:32:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None 1) when you a cat creature pounces does he have to make a grapple check to get his rake attack - i think no, but my dm seems to think yes - i have a leopard animal companion so its important to me. 2) Can i consider myself flanking during my charge attack, allowing me a +4 to hit, provided someone is in a normal flanking position with me. Thanks guys

If its not grappling, no rakes. The Pounce special is completly seperate, and allows the creature to make a full attack (that would generally be a bite and 2 claws) after charging. Generally a creature with Rake also has Improved Grab, allowing it to attempt to grapple as a free action if either of its claw attacks hit. Thus, under normal circumstances, a creature with both Rake and Improved Grab has a chance of getting its Rake attacks every round but it must both hit with a claw attack and succed on a grapple check to do so. That one looks open to interpretation to me, and my interpretation would be that your DM is correct. Here's why: Pounce says that the creature can make a full attack, "including two rake attacks". Now then, rake is listed as a special attack, not part of the normal full attack routine. As far as the way it's written, the leopard has to have a hold on its opponent before it can rake. So, basically, he can pounce, make all his attacks, attempt to grapple and, if the grapple is successful, he can rake. 2.) Yes. I guess unless i can find a creature with a rake attack and not have improved grab then that all makes sense. my train of though was just that it says you can make a full attack including 2 rakes. then under rake it doesnt specify that you need to grapple, only that its an attack. only under improved grab does it specify that if you hit with a bite attack you can start a grapple and if sucessful rake, and that when grappling you can also rake ontop of your one attack.

A Lion is required to bite to initiate the grapple.... a Tiger can use his claws or bite... Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of All Who Threaten it
