I put this in the d20 section, but I know a lot of people don't go there. So if you're into anime/manga, I recommend checking this out. It's a pretty cool system that's a lot more open-ended than D&D.. and they convert all the D&D classes over to their system so you can still play D&D w/o playing D&D!

Noooooooooo! Speak not of the travesty that is BESM d20! Such a thing is a terrible corruption of that which is excellent and cool, the Tri-Stat system! Begone foul creature of d20's innermost evil!

I'll take a look at it, but for me, BESM is defined by the Tri-Stat system. Good, honest fun.

I haven't seen the full rules for the tri-stat system, but I can tell that the d20 system isn't as versatile. Still, it looks very fun and much more open-ended than D&D (as stated previously).

I've heard great things about both systems. I'll have to take a look at the d20 version, as it might well fit better for a campaign idea I have rolling about in my skull.

Tri-Stat is better for BESM. Hands down.

Tri-stat is a whole new system, though. For a much more managable learning curve, d20 is great. You can then transition from there to tri-stat if need be.

My homeslice JC wants to run a BESM D20 game, and he's a novice DM. Got any advice I can pass along to the guy? Are there any more web resources you guys know of other than Guardians of Order?
He did not care anymore: Life and Death, the same. All that mattered was that the crowd would be there to greet him with howls of lust, and fury! |

Reading the BESM d20 book
|
I've been reading the BESM d20 book. It looks rather decent, but it's trying to cover a huge amount of ground (anything animated in Japanese studios) and thus a lot of the rules are quite general.
Thus, I suggest the following special ability for BESM d20: Do What You Want Point Cost: Up to DM's Discretion Progression: Up to DM's Discretion You detail exactly what is it that you can do, and the DM assigns a point cost to it. Use the other special abilities as a guide. |

BESM d20 Thoughts | ||||
|
Now that everyobe who's wanted to has had a chance to look at BESM d20, what do people think of it? I've had the book for several months, and while I know a lot more about it than I did I was wondering if people around here have completely given up on the game.
Also note: Guardians of order is going to be doing even more d20 stuff including a relatively straight d20 adaptation of Slayers, which I am really looking forward to. If i want to disucss the general use of d20 for anime purposes on this forum, where should I go? (Obligatory newbie question). |

This is (hopefully) the best place to discuss BESM d20
|
My opinion of BESM d20 is that there are a lot of great ideas in the book, so I'll be using it a lot.
But adding character points and flaws to the d20 system perhaps adds a level of complexity that is undesirable. For a game, it would probably be better to either go with a d20 without character points, or to go with a game that is based around character points, such as GURPS (or the Tri-Stat system, which I have not seen). So, I do not plan on running an actual BESM d20 game, but I do plan on using a lot of ideas from the book. |

Character points may be useful
|
I am considering some form of character points, which can be used for new and replacement characters. THe idea is that you may start out with a minor magic item or other niftys, if you pay the cost in character levels.
But I won't use the full-blown system. Each campaign will probably have its own list of what character points may be spent on. |
