But I think I should have a d20 Iron Mantra setting. So I thought I'd start a new thread for ideas. About the same time, I was reading The Book of Fiends, by Green Ronin publishing, so I got the idea of a setting where major nations are under the rule of demons. The heroes, of course, would be trying to overthrow this rule. Any other ideas would be welcome.

The idea Iron Mantra brings to mind for me is a secret alliance of adventurers, obeying a strict code, working in the shadows to bring down these demonic rulers. Attempting to fight the evil magic of the creatures with new advances in technology, making the game sort of steampunk. Not as coherent an explanation as I'd like, but my mind's a bit off today. My brother has been wanting to play a D&D version of the Thief setting. The steampunk style might work very well. Iron Mantra could be a Guild in the setting, the name of an adventure or "chapter" in the story... or maybe even the name of the campaign setting. Kinda neat. If you need a refresh on the Thief setting: Basic setting is a strange mix of medieval or renaissance real world, mixed with some kinds of "old style" magics (not D&D spell slot magic, the rougher kind you might find in books, etc). Technology is steampunk, but things like "mechanical eyes" and "programmable devices" are possible. It may touch on a concept such as the "ethereal", although maybe not quite like the D&D Ethereal plane (although that would be a cool idea). Big thing is new religion of "Creation out of Iron" vs the "Old Ways of the Woodsie Lord" (druidic style magic). Iron Mantra fits very well... Thief d20, here I come Edit Example of the technology possible: The main character in the 2nd game has a replacement mechanical eye that he can remove and view through. They don't mention having "radio signal" technology, and instead mention something about "using the ether waves", etc. Maybe it's just "their word" for it. Another example is brass 'turret-like' machines, or even moving mechanical machines, powered by electricity (or this ether thing) or by steam... but they can designate friend or foe, and have a "camera"-like thing for "eyes". There's also recording capabilities, similar to an LP or gramaphone (I think that's what they are).

Ugh... I remember that. Calculus = 'What's that funny smell.. oh, that's my BRAIN ON FIRE'. Anyways.. funny you mention Unreal Tournament, since a really fun Mod was made for it (the original UT, not UT2k3 or 2k4... yet), based off of the Thief games. It's called Thievery UT... very fun stuff. Play as a thief, or as a guard (you take over a bot as a guard). They've got most of the concept behind it down pat.. but gave the Guards fun things to play with (different crossbow ammunition, etc). Fun stuff. My brother keeps trying to get me to play it online with him, heh.

So I was thinking of more of a traditional sword and sorcery. I was also thinking monks. An "iron mantra" could grant them something like ki powers. Thieves, of course, would have a role, as would wizards and sorcerers and all the other character classes. But then I got distracted by my idea for a Sedna d20 setting, which I've also posted ideas on. And I'm still trying to get a conventional D&D game going, but I've been sick, ... I need a wand of focussing or something.
