Best Alternative d20 System |
Lead | |
|
Recently Inquest Magazine had a contest seeing which was the favorite d20 open license game. In this, Spycraft was the one to take the victory. I was wondering if the people on this board agreed wtih this, and if not, which game should be the one that won the title as best d20 RPG. Please give a point or two as to why the game is the best, such as "better armor sytem" or "great new feats" etc etc. Thanks alot.

I'd have to say my vote's torn between d20 Modern and Swashbuckling Adventures. I like the d20 Modern classes, how they offer more variety, and the core classes are places to start, not an ending place. Swashbuckling gets points for having some wicked flava. This game is not a game of balance. It is not a game for rules lawyers. This is a game where what is important is that whatever you do, you look dang good doing it. I do like that in a game.

Here, here! The Swashbuckling Adventures is a great book. But I suppose you have to be into looking good before being good. It also helps if you have a little background in the 7th Sea world.
For a game that doesn't seem to be good in a translation is the Deadlands game. Taking away the cards seems to make the game less fun. But the wild west concept is a classic. For an accurate post total, add 1,796. |

It's hard to say.
I've never picked up most d20 systems, not even Spycraft, so I couldn't tell ya if what I've tried is the best. Most often, I have to take what's out there, and modify it to fit what I want anyways.. in that way, no d20 system deserves a perfect rating. However, in the matter of opinions.. I have found d20 Modern very much what I wanted in a heroic modern campaign. I don't know if Spycraft could have filled the niche as well, or better, but Modern's classes, feats, and similarities to D&D really did it for me. Wheel of Time on the other hand, was amazing! My only beef with that system was the way they did their "caster" classes... it could have been done a little more like psionics, instead of like the traditional D&D casters. However, their classes, especially Prestige Classes, were amazingly designed.. not to mention the rest of the magic system, and their monsters. It's actually what brought me over to 3e. I had bought the WoT d20 system before I bought the core rules |

I have played several different games under the d20 ogl. The best of the breed was d20 Modern, for the same reasons mentioned above. It was well designed, and allowed the GM to run us through the action movie genre without a hitch.
I have also played Star Wars d20, traveller d20 (T20), and Wheel of Time. Of these also rans, I love the hard gritty lethality of T20. If your a hard sci-fi gamer, this old game is a nice find. I have not yet played spycraft, though it appears to be a fine game. I will also have a look at Swashbuckling adventures, at the recommendation of my fellow board members. Amalric |

The only other d20 game I've really played is Star Wars d20. I had a cool Jawa scoundrel who was a lot of fun to play. I've heard the Jedis dominate the game at high levels, but at low levels the game is fun.
I've concocted a blend of Cthulhu, Ravenloft, and Deadlands d20, but that was really a D&D game. |

The only two non-D&D d20 games I've played were Star Wars and d20 Modern, and of these, d20 Modern stood out by a long shot. Especially for action heros.

I would agree with Spycraft being the best. Just behind that though is D20 Modern.
Spycraft blew me away when it came out because it presented extensive new rules (chases), balanced new classes, and the gadgets were well-done. Shadowforce Archer, the campaign setting for Spycraft, blew me away for all the wrong reasons. Psionics, psionic items...all things that I did not want in an espionage game. That really disappointed me... D20 Modern hs the best class system of any D20 game I have seen. The core classes are nicely done, and are merely jumping off points. I hope D&D 4th edition uses a class system similar to D20 Modern. |
