Chapter 2Q: The Ghirrash |
Lead | |
|
As the others hide in ambush, Qayan stands within the narrow corridor, facing off over a distance opposite the towering, currently hunched figure of the Ghirrash. The creature continues to be hard to look at, it's position shifting slightly as you watch.

A disembodied voice: You leave me to escape? I
I dont know what to say. Im touched
really. Or could it be that you are bound in some fashion?
As I suspected, yes? Hmm
perhaps you would indeed be interested in hearing my offer born out to its details. It could mean your freedom. Is this of value to you?

"Of course...but I think it rather unlikely that you are willing, or even able, to accomplish it."
The creature drums two sets of clawed fingers against its left forearms, gazing into the empty space before it. "After all, you've played me for the fool once, tricked me twice, and are wary enough to avoid being easy meat. Why should I bother with you any further?" |

The source-less voice continues its dialogue: I am sorry if I offended you, guardian. But you can hardly blame me for doing all within my power to avoid becoming your latest meal. You see, Ive grown somewhat partial to my skin. But above all, I am a pragmatist. If there is any way we can reach a
mutually beneficial agreement, I am open to it. Tell me who has imprisoned you thus?

Re: Chapter 2Q: The Ghirrash

A thoughtful look appears on the feline face. The Ghirrash considers for a moment, then offers, "A Dwarven priest...many years ago...of the clans of this city. Sarbreen. He knew the city was falling, knew the portal might bring other foes. Thus, he summoned me, and thus he bound me. He forbade me attack his kinfolk...a pity he only specified his clan, yes?" With this, a large, toothy grin.
"Years, many years, of boredom, frustration and starvation passed. Creatures came from time to time...moments of feeding to slake my hunger." With this, the four clawed hands flex, the claws themselves fully extended. "The Illithid were the latest. Seeking to pass unharmed, they swarmed me with their servants...I slaughtered them, and gladly so." "What you can do? Simple enough...if you be a powerful mage, which I doubt. Banish me...banish me back to my home, to freedom from this state. Gone from here, you can easily gain access...to your companion, to his goods and those of others foolish enough to pass this way, and to that accursed portal which I've seen far too much of." "Can you do that?" |

Ah
I understand, at last. The voice grows still, as if considering deeply the guardians words.
After a lengthy pause, the tiefling speaks: I offer you this then as a means for you to return to your beloved home after many years of exemplary service, and of course as a means for my goals to also be achieved. I do, point in fact, have access to the magics of which you speak. They are not impossible for one such as myself to obtain. Ready coin would be all that would be required. Sadly, even though I am favorably disposed to help you, I lack the wealth. You, however, seem to have that wealth at your disposal for you have gleaned it thru besting your previous adversaries The tiefling nods and strokes his invisible chin thoughtfully. The matter then would be that of trust and I may even be able to rectify that. Please, if you would, stay here. I will return shortly. A solution is at hand |

As Qayan turns to rejoin his companions, the reply comes from behind..."indeed...as if I had much choice in the matter."

Qayan returns to his comrades and draws them out of hiding. Invisibly, the tieflings voice emanates near each friend: Come, let us speak near the portcullis so all can hear.
When everyone is assembled, and his invisibility has played-out, Qayan bows and greets the group. Well met, my friends. I return. I have very good evidence to suggest that the guardian cannot escape its servitude unaided, so we are relatively safe discussing our matters here. Grinning unsettlingly, the tiefling continues. Our way is still barred by the beast, but I have had opportunity to speak with it at length. It would seem that long ago, the guardian we have encountered was bound to the gate we seek by a dwarven priest of a clan Sarbreen, I do believe. Suffice to say, it now longs to be freed and returned to its home in the shadowplane. It cannot venture beyond the length of the hallway jutting south of the rocky chamber that lies just before the stone arch. Therefore it cannot be lured to this place. Staunching a bit of bloodflow from his back shoulder and casting an eye to Zanas, Qayan continues. Your previous comment regarding dismissal or banishment of the beast has turned out to be quite topical, mlady. For indeed, that is exactly what the guardian desires. This effort, of course, does not come with out a price but the beast has collected some wealth over the ages and I believe we may use this to achieve our desired end. Our foe is still just that however a foe. It has not lasted as long as it has down here thru great leaps of faith and trust in others. It will not relinquish its wealth nor our fallen comrade upon mere promises of aid. The crimson-eyed tiefling stares intensely at the group. I believe the only way we will get the wealth and the body of our fallen Gronrindul will be to offer the beast an assurance of our return and insurance of our commitment to the task. I would ask that one of you accompany me back to the beasts lair to offer it a trade: the body of our comrade and the wealth it has acquired for me. I would stay in its custody thus assuring that you would tend to the task swiftly and purposefully. You would need to withdraw from this place and obtain the help we need from the temple. Our mimicking friend will also need to be relocated as per our arrangement Craning his neck to view the mimic, Qayan continues: but that, of course, would have to delayed until the issue with the guardian is resolved. I'm sure you understand." What say you all? |

Khasar shakes his head. "You can look at the carnage this thing has wrought and think to FREE it?" Khasar askes incredulously "Or have you forgotten about the slaughter we saw? Where it my body in there I would gladly leave it there unhonored and unblessed, even if it meant my way to Tempus was barred, before I was used as an exuse to free a childkiller." Khasar spits at the ground in disgust. "I will give my life and my afterlife to help retrieve Gron'rindul's body and to put an end to this creature, but I will not be party to freeing it."

Qayan nods to Khasar and raises a black-nailed finger. Opening his mouth, the tiefling promptly closes it and turns to Valarion.
"Valarion, would you please explain the concepts behind 'banishment' to our good friend Khasar?" |

Re: Chapter 2Q: The Ghirrash

Khasar scoffs, interupting the wizard. "I know what banashment is. You send the creature back where it came from. Which in this case is the plane of SHADOWS. Have you forgotten that there are people living there too?" Khasar asks pausing to look at Zanas, "Or are you saying they deserve to be slaughtered?"

"That is its native habitat, my friend. That is where it belongs. It is a wholly different place than here. Just as on this plane we have natural predators: giants, werecreatures, dire beasts, etc., so does the shadow realm. Just as we deal with our natural predators, so must the denizens of the shadow realm.
The point is: who is more able to handle the threat associated with this kind of predator? The dwellers of our world who have little knowledge of such a beast, or the dwellers of the shadow realm where this type of creature is far more commonplace? Lastly, it is a killer, Khasar. That is what it does. Is the wolf evil for devouring the lamb? The Ghirrash slew anything that it could get its hands on. The real evil here were the illithid who used the younglings as shields to allow safe passage thru the gate. |

"Bah, A wolf kills when it is hungry or in danger, and it eats what it kills. This thing kills for joy, it kills to inflict pain. That is different. This monster is a beast of nightmares. It went through us like we were nothing. How many do you think it would kill before it was destroyed? If this thing would be so easily destroyed on its home plane why does it long to go back there? I would not want someone to banish a werewolf to this world when they could destroy it and I will not send this thing back when we could kill it." Khasa counters

Re: Chapter 2Q: The Ghirrash

"Either option would be fine, I do not favor one of them in particular, as long as it removes the beast from our path to revive the dwarf." Valarion replies, after finally catching a break in the somewhat heated discussion between Khasar and Qayan.
"Khasar's view on Banishment is correct: while we do banish the creature to its own plane of existence, few spells can actually accurately send it to a precise location, and there is no way to tell where it would appear and how it would react to its surroundings. I am inclined to simply banish it, simply because the problem would be out of our hands, and others will deal with it. It's not as though we are sending it to harm to some other individuals; it's simply the fact we are putting this up to the weave of fate, and let Tymora and Besheeba decide who shall exert her power on this matter. Who are we, to decide for the goddesses?" |

"Quite sensible, master...quite sensible indeed," chimes in Salvistin. "Given the choice between dealing with the creature with ease and minimal risk, or attempting an armed solution that may well add to it's immediate death toll...instead of some theoretical future death toll some distance away...seems the most practical way to resolve this. Indeed, I strongly favor our banishment of the beast."

"Actually, my home plane is very desolate. I come from one of the few towns even somewhat worth sparing. In fact, if there were a way to specify an area, I know of a few places..." Zanas looks at the others, then shakes her head. "We generally don't have to deal with things like this, but I know that most towns have a good back-up plan. Unless it were to appear in the middle of a town, the thing would not cause much harm. At most it would cause a relocation of a town, but we have gotten used to that. Believe me, Khasar, there would be little damage."

Khasar shakes his head in defeat. "If you deem this the best course of action, Zanas, I will not argue, but this leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Let us be done with this devil's deal."

Re: Chapter 2Q: The Ghirrash

Valarion nods, "Then it's done. Qayan, would you prefer to seal the deal with the beast alone once more, or should we accompany you? Either way, we need to acquire the funds, or the equilvent there of, for a scroll of such spell, then come back down for the real business."

Qayan nods to Khasar thoughtfully and compassionately.
Turing to Valarion: My thoughts are as follows: the guardian desires to be released. If we offer it tangible assurance that we work toward that end, it will assist us. I believe that if I offer myself as this assurance by remaining in its custody it will relinquish its hoard and, more importantly, it will give us the remainder of our fallen comrade. In order to broker this deal, I would need one of our party to assist me we need not expose our entire group. This other would accept the wealth and the corpse and then return with the group to swiftly seek resolution at the temple above. Gronrindul should be raised during this time if at all possible as well. |

Re: Chapter 2Q: The Ghirrash

Valarion affirms the Tiefling's suggestion with but a nonsensical grunt. "Khasar, if you would, I believe this is best for you to go. One, you have the great strength of carrying our fallen friend's corpse as well as other material wealth, and two, your... limited knowledge in the Arcane Arts will allow us some more freedom in our future actions in the deal, as well as the trust of the beast as you won't be faking any spells."
