By the light of Qayan's blade, he and Khasar travel down the passageway once more. No sign of the beast is visible where the clawmarks mar the stone, and as they reach the entrance to the first main chamber, they find Gron'rindul's head no longer upon the end of his axe...both have been knocked over and separated.

"Well Qayan,"Khasar says in a hushed voice, "What do you want to do? Do we shout for your friend or go further in?"
As he waits for a reply Khasar walks over to Gron'rindul's axe and head and retrieves them both. |

Qayan raises a hand to bar the entrance of his comrade into the room. Wait
Listening closely, the tiefling strains to hear any sign of the beast (Listen +6). Then, he calls out from the hallway into the chamber: Guradian! I have returned. Stand forth so that we may discuss your freedom from this place. |

A low snarl preceeds the approach of the creature, from the corridor to the north. As it strides forward into the room, it looks both of you over as if searching for some sort of hidden trick.
"What is there yet to discuss? Do as you intend, to the benefit of all, or try your luck against me!" |

Nodding in greeting, but never taking his eyes off the creature, Qayan speaks:
Guardian. You yearn for release from this place, and it is my pleasure to inform you: this is very close at hand. I have the means to secure your freedom; and you have the wealth but the issue, of course, is trust. I am prepared to offer you this trust In order to secure the magics necessary to dismiss you from your service here and return you to your home plane, I would need the wealth you have accrued during your duties. I expect you will not likely part with this easily so I am prepared to offer you assurance that the money will indeed be spent as stated to your benefit. I offer to remain here as your guest whilst my comrade here secures the materials we need to effect your release. As you know firsthand, I very much hold my existence in high regard and I would not throw it away on so foolish a gamble. I realize failure to appease you during this endeavor will forfeit my life ... and I accept this. We desire access to the gate and the remains of our fallen comrade. You desire dismissal from your servitude and release to your natural demesne. We have here the workings of a mutually beneficial agreement and I am prepared to secure this agreement with my life. The tiefling's dim, crimson eyes regard the beast levelly. "What say you, guardian? |

Lower arms crossed, the Ghirrash places his chin in his upper-right hand, tapping a claw to his cheek. "So...the last time you were here, you pleaded a need for healing, turned, and fled. This time, you offer yourself as hostage, having already proved full well your ability to escape me, and likely counting on trusting in it a second time? I think not. I'm sure a resourcefull fellow like yourself can scrape together the funds without my help."

Re: Chapter 2Q: The Ghirrash | ||

It seems a shame you have resigned yourself to live out your days a prisoner. You have the means to affect your release your wealth that you have no use for and yet you do not bring it to bear. The magics you speak of are simply beyond our means to obtain without the coin of your hoard. I can offer you no better assurance than my word and my life. If you can think of a better way, I would hear it.
Look at it from my point of view. I need access to my fallen comrade. I need access to that gate you guard. I cannot best you in combat. Therefore, it behooves me to find another way. This deal I propose only serves to achieve those ends. Even if I were to somehow escape you again and rob you of your hoard, I would still have neither my friends remains nor access to the gate. I would have failed utterly. Consider again what my motives might be, guardian. Use these motives to your advantage. You have served a dead clan for countless years now. Is it not time to serve yourself? I offer you freedom. Tell me that you have not forgotten what that is. |

"I've got a better idea...him. The big guy. He stays as the hostage, you go. I suspect he'd be hard pressed to slip past me unnoticed. Now, how sincere are you in your desire to recover your fallen comrade? Enough so to put another at risk?"

Only the clenching of his jaws betray Khasar's emotions as he realizes the only way for him to recover his comrades remains is to stay as the ghirrash's hostage. Finally Khasar controls his emotions enought to trust his voice. "I will stay with this abomination if that is what it takes to get Gron'rinduls remains."
Khasar's mouth starts to open again, but he stops short of making threats he knows are idol. Turning to Qayan: "Hurry and gather what you need, the less time I am here the better." |

A large, toothy, feral grin comes across the Ghirrash's face. "It seems we are making progress. Excellent. Right this way...but leave the weapons first. No need to take chances." One of it's left arms gestures towards the passage leading toward the portal.
"You stay here," he comments to Qayan. "I'll be back in a bit." |

"So you only talk big." Khasar says as he unstraps his swords and hands them and his bow to Qayan. "If you are afraid of me attacking you don't you think I would have done that while Qayan was here to aid me?"

"Was I afraid when I nearly tore out your throat yesterday, big man? Was I afraid when I tore your Dwarven companion limb from limb as you all fled in terror?" The feral grin still upon the creature's cat-like face, it continues, "don't think too much of yourself, I'm just trying to encourage you not to do anything...foolish. Now get a move on...your friend has business to conduct."

"Not as I recall." Khasar says as he follows the beast, "Which is why I wonder why you insisted I leave my weapons behind. Believe me, were I going to do anything foolish I would already have done." Khasar finishes as he flexes his [hand] and feels the power and want of the sinew, this time he is barely able to master its desire, since it is so close to his own.

(Khasar)
The carnage in the portal chamber is, if anything, worse than before...for a day's worth of rot has set in. The Ghirrash gestures towards a rock pile against the eastern wall. "Have a seat. And keep clear of the portal...I wouldn't want to jinx my freedom from your frying yourself." With that, the creature heads towards the fallen rubble on the oppposite wall, lifting several massive stones with his four arms and setting them aside. |

After a few minutes, the creature unearths a pair of sacks. With his back turned, he briefly rummages through one, moves a few to the other, then picks up both sacks and heads back under the precarious archway to make his way to meet with Qayan. (Qayan) A short while passes, and then Qayan hears the creature approach, carrying a pair of sacks. He stops at the corridor entrance, glancing back over his shoulder, then tosses a sack to the ground. "There! There should be enough in that sack to procure twice the power you need. If you'll do as you say, you've more than earned it...and if not, your friend will give me enough entertainment to be worth the price. Don't take too long." |

Looking somewhat incredulously at the guardian, the tiefling states: Come now, let us not waste each others time. You have my comrade Khasar in your safekeeping and the dwarfs remains. You know I will return. The current market price of the necessary magics is quite beyond what you expect; let me assure you. You have been down here for quite some time. You have brought both sacks and neither of us desires for me to return empty-handed due to lack of funds. What is the value of another small parcel of wealth when weighed against your impending freedom?

"My patience grows thin. My soul howls for me to rend your flesh, but I wait...because of what you offer. What is here," he gestures to the other sack, "is what I take with me when I return home, which I will not leave behind for your comrade to ransack. You have what you need...so be about it!"

Qayan bows curtly to the guardian and collects the sack.
Laden with Khasars arms and the parcel of booty, the tiefling rejoins the group. Looking a bit haggard, Obviously there has been a change of plans. Khasar has agreed to stay with the beast in my stead. To the temple let us make haste. |
