Salvistin's only reply is a nod.

Qayan detours toward the mimic's room.
Upon arriving, the tiefling steps forward to the creature and addresses it: "I told you we would return for you, and I have kept my word. We will now see you to a place of better habitation ... but first, I must ask for your assistance." Qayan looks to the creature for signs of awareness. |

One large eye warily opens upon the wooden surface. It is followed soon after by a large, toothy mouth. "Oh, you did come back...I thought you were dead by now. Dead, or else forgot entirely about me, left me to rot. Got anything tasty? Hmm? I didn't exactly get full off of that last bit."
Serin has his axe out from the moment the chest starts to speak, but Salvistin just glances at it, softly saying "interesting". |

"You will soon receive your award," Valarion says to the talking chest, "both in the form of escortship out of this place, and in the form of food for you to consume. My red-eyed friend here will inform you of how we can all benefit from our cooperation."

Zanas eyes the chest, staying a bit back. Why must we ask this thing for help? He knows nothing. He is. . . or is it me? No, remember Zanas, that is not how you keep yourself happy. You've helped many people, you just don't know how things work up here. Heh, silly. A few doors, a few sneaks, and it's all better. She stares at the floor, working to pin down any bit of information floating in her head.
Ah, you've tried. They know what they're doing. |

Qayan grins unsettlingly as the creature speaks. Ha! Dead he says. You jest, good chest. The tieflings eyes flare to brilliance with this remark.
Nay, my friend. We are very much alive and, fortunately for you, we honor our agreements. We have come to help remove you from this poor hunting ground, as you requested. However, in order to do so, it would seem we were destined again to be strange allies Qayan pauses before continuing. Ill put it bluntly: there is a creature blocking our and sadly your egress from this place. We have explored every other inch of this godforsaken pit, but to no avail. We must drive past this guardian in order to proceed. I would enlist your help, good chest. I am certain that with your assistance, we can all gain what we so sorely need: we the continuation of our quest, and more importantly you your freedom and relocation to an abundant hunting site. If you are open to this arrangement, I would tell you of our strategy. I feel you would find it a most satisfying one, as it makes use of your considerable strengths, and it allows you to feed. Qayan looks to the chest for a response. |

"hmmm" the chest considers. "I suppose...but you had better not be planning on leaving me behind a second time! What's the plan?"

Nodding as if in compliance to the mimics statement, Qayan continues.
Excellent. Its a fairly simple plan really. Succinctly: we lead our foe to you, you grapple it, and we in turn shall dispatch it with all of our concentrated effort. Adhering to the plan, you will have the element of surprise on your side as well which, of course, you would doubtless prefer. You can form yourself into other shapes, can you not? Can you manage a stout portcullis? Perhaps a heavy stone archway? Eh? The tiefling nods and wags a black-nailed finger. We are all well on our way to significant gain here, good chest. And with your strength we are certain to succeed. |

"Hmmm" comments the chest. "Sounds like you have me taking the biggest risk, doing the hardest work. I'll have a look at the situation, but I ain't about to get myself killed to make your lives easier. I mean to take advantage of your offer to haul me out of here!"
With that, the chest sprouts four stubby legs, and begins a slow, waddling march towards the door. |

When the group finally arrives at the dome chamber closest to the northern-most halls, Qayan turns to address the mimic once again.
Listen. I wont have you tagging-along, only to decide that it doesnt suit you to help us in the end. You wont be getting out of here at all if were all dead. Only if we work together will we succeed. I need a commitment from you. You are no more at risk than any of us. We are each capitalizing on our strengths: you, with your ability to camouflage and bind our foe, and we, with our superior numbers, tactics, and weaponry. We each risk much together we succeed, individually we will fail. Either way, if you would like to stay down here and rot hoping for a rat or two to scamper by over the course of several months, then so be it. Starvation would not be my first choice when it came to living out the rest of my days but to each their own Consider what we offer you: an honored agreement to relocate you to ample hunting grounds, and numerous allies to stand with you against a foe that keeps you from that very desired place. I doubt you will get a better deal from anyone else down here for some time to come. When the battle is joined, we must know that we can count on you. How will you prove your commitment to us, good chest? I would hear you." |

The stumpy legs disappear, and two eyes, with brows furrowed in anger and frustration, sprout above the large mouth.
"You promised that before, too...without asking me to put myself at risk. You've already changed the deal once...what's to say you don't change it again? You're up against something big here...I can tell by your voice." The eyes vanish, the mouth smooths out a bit as the chest pauses. "Here's where it sits. If you're close at hand, if I know you're going to be there and attacking it, then I'll be doing my part. But I am NOT going to take on, alone, something you're afraid to face together without my aid." With that last comment, Serin glares at the chest and hefts his axe a few inches, but says nothing. Salvistin observes the entire exchange with a small, amused smile on his face, and waits for Valarion to explain anything more about his own part in the upcomming fray. |

Qayan considers for a moment the chests words. Alright. Fair enough. I think I understand your viewpoint now.
Worry not, good chest. We are not about to let you do all the fighting. We all of us have a lot at stake here as you have surmised, and we are not about to pull any punches. We will be at your side, with spell, sword, and bow in order to dispatch this enemy. Just well when you get a hold of it dont let it go. Qayan grins disarmingly. Now, the plan is to lead the creature into this chamber you will be disguised as a stone arch or whatever you feel is best here, near the portcullis. You will allow it to enter the chamber, hot on my heels. I will evade it and close the portcullis. Our allies will then launch their attack thru the gate. When it realizes it is trapped, it will seek to rip the gate from its hinges in order to rend the obvious aggressors beyond it. That is where you must strike, and bind our foe. I will then raise the gate and we will rush forward and dispatch the bound beast with all of our concentrated effort. Without turning, the tiefling smiles to the chest and says aloud: Lady Zanas, would you please rig a mechanism to manipulate the portcullis switch? Perhaps you have a pole or something with a grip on the end to serve? Thank you. I have some rope here if you require it for lashing. And so, the preparation begins |

Salvistin nods as Qayan finishes speaking. "I believe I now see my role in this matter. Fair enough. I have what I need to watch my own back.
Fingering the scroll, he wanders over to the table, sitting atop it, watching the rest. Serin Brightshield also seems to be decently pleased with the plan, watching to see where Khasar is planning on waiting, and moving to stand beside him there. Moments later, there is a second rug on the floor, south of the first and right by the entrance. An eye forms within the dizzying woven pattern, and winks at Qayan. |

"I believe it is best we simply hide now, around the corners, by the side of the dome, and so on, and do not delay anymore." Valarion shrugs, "It matters not how well we are hidden, this beast will have but a few seconds before it realizes what is going on, and those six legs won't help it escape out of this one."

Zanas looks up at the switch. She checks to make sure how it works, then proceeds to rig a simple extention, using the expandable poles, the tools, and some rope.
She will try to make it as subtle as possible, but will put more importance on reliability. Preferably a simple rope pull. |

Khasar will try and find a place to hide. Trying to figure out the route that Qayan and the beast are most likely to take so that he can use any objects that might be around to help him stay out of sight.

Finally, your preparations are made. Each of you are within your hiding places, items ready and at hand for your assault. A pair of ropes attach to the lever, one looped above over a piton, such that the lever can work either way.
Qayan, alone, stands at the mouth of the northern passage, preparing to head into the lair of the shadow beast and face what lies ahead. |

Qayan verifies that all of his comrades are hidden adequately nodding to each in turn. He then returns to test the portcullis rope mechanism one last time. Satisfied, he kneels down to lay his hand on the mimic rug reassuringly. Victory, he says under his breath.
Qayan then purposefully starts up the long hallway as quietly and as stealthily as possible [Hide +5, M. Silent +5]. Upon nearing the precarious stone arch, the tiefling will quaff his potion of invisibility [Duration 30r] and proceed into the chamber beyond his vigilance heightened to peak levels [Spot +9, Listen +6, Search +8]. |
