Before he reaches the stone arch, Qayan enters into the earlier large chamber. One thing has changed, distinctly. In the center of the chamber, Gron'rindul's battleaxe has been upended, supported between two large stones. Capping the axe-handle is the severed, mangled head of Gron'rindul, gazing back through empty eyes towards Qayan just as he enters the chamber.

Grimacing, Qayan nods in greeting to the disembodied head.
. o O (Ever the vigilant, eh my friend? By the Ladys grace, I shall not be joining you.) The tiefling presses on down the hall, thru the arch, and into the portal chamber beyond. (OOC: Qayan will execute the same actions as stated in the previous post.) |

Re: Chapter 2P: The Trap ...

As Qayan turns from addressing the head of his friend, heading for the nearby corridor, a slight shift of the nearby stone behind him is all the warning he receives. Leaping down from the piled rocks, in a nitch hardly visible from any angle but the present one, the shadow-cat creature comes barreling towards Qayan, claws-first, and strikes at him!
Claws savagely tear into him even as he is turning, and the creature's bite bears a paralytic saliva, one which robs Qayan of any ability to move or act. Standing over him, the creature gazes about intently, listening cautiously. Sensing nothing, it turns it's gaze back down to Qayan. "Well? Where are the rest of them? Don't tell me you came here alone? Did they abandon you? Or trick you into doing their dirty work? Are they back safe in their homes, or cowering in the tunnel behind? Which is it? Oh, don't worry...you'll live long enough to answer my questions." Qayan feels a feeble strength returning to his limbs. His throat unsiezes and he is able to respond to his attacker. Combat thread |

Slowly and deliberately pulling himself back up to his feet, the tiefling chokes back the pain and wills himself to speak.
I come here of my own accord, guardian and I do so out of respect. I recognize your strength and your cunning, and I know you are more than a match for me. I am not here to do battle. Nay, Ive not even drawn a weapon in my approach. I seek parley, for I know one of your keen intellect knows the value of such things. Coughing up a bit of blood, Qayan lowers his hands wide. I am in your power as I knew I would be. Will you not hear me out? I have something to offer you. |

Caught a bit off guard, the creature visibly relaxes, it's four arms dropping to its sides. "Oh, this should definately be interesting. What, pray tell, have you to offer me then, that I can't simply take by rending you limb from limb?"

Re: Chapter 2P: The Trap ...

Excellent. I am Qayan
Qayan Koyl at your service. The tiefling bows curtly forward, winces with pain, and then continues.
Yes. You most certainly could, as you so eloquently put it, rend this body limb from limb. And as I said before, I know I am no match for you. However, the little wealth and satisfaction you would gain from this rather gristly act would pale vastly in comparison to that which I have come prepared to offer. Indeed for something which only you can provide. The tiefling wags a black-nailed finger to punctuate his point. Wincing yet again, Qayan staggers and continues: Before I continue however, I would ask your leave to heal myself. Know that I do not wish my efforts to be construed as a deception, and so I ask you humbly for your permission. Producing two vials, the tiefling continues: These draughts will serve only to mitigate my pain and allow me to speak clearly. As you are no doubt keenly aware, my level of health has no bearing on your ability to end my life. The tiefling nods respectfully. |

The creature shrugs. "Heal if you like...it won't serve you against me should you try anything untoward. As for the rest, well...I'm doubtful, but willing to hear you out."

Valarion frowns as time passes by, yet still preceives no sighs of Qayan, nor the beast. This is not right... the Invisibility potion contained but the basic spell, Qayan shouldn't be taking so much time to lure the beast. We should... no, he has this planned since the beginning, he knows what his doing. However, it is long... one, just one more minute, I have to tell them to do something.

Re: Chapter 2P: The Trap ...

Qayan bows deeply to the guardian, Truly, you are a great and noble creature
Qayan then quaffs one of the curing potions, caps and replaces the spent vial in his belt (while smoothly pulling another potion). I hold you in the deepest respect He drinks another curing potion, then caps and replaces it neatly in his belt as well. With a smile and obviously looking a bit relieved, he raises a finger and begins to speak. "Now then ...", the crimson-eyed tiefling begins ... and then he coyly drinks the third potion he pulled that of invisibility. Turning, the tiefling bolts down the passageway from whence he came. now I must go, you arrogant, insufferable fool! Ha-ha! [OOC: Out of combat, Qayan quaffs 2 CMW potions; Smooth-talks (Bluff +6, making the additional potion seem simple and innocuous); Quaffs an invisibility potion, and then runs like a bat outta hell!] |

A swiping blow catches Qayan on the shoulder has he darts for the corridor. As hoped, and feared, the shadowy form drops to all fours and begins barreling down the corridor after Qayan, shoulders striking stone on either side as he presses onwards, his smooth speech replaced with howls of rage.
It is mere moments later when the rest of you begin to hear the approach of the shadow-creature. It's shouts echo through the empty tunnels, the half-roar, half-snarl of the catlike creature discordant, unnerving and grating upon your senses. |

Re: Chapter 2P: The Trap ...

Qayan flees with all deliberate speed down the corridor all the while strategically making sure that his pursuer can hear him clearly: Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh!
Ultimately, when the choice must be made, Qayan will break right and thereby approach the NW dome chamber from the NW-most archway. If the beast appears to lose Qayan at any point along the way, the tiefling will half-draw his longsword (while running) in order to illuminate his immediate location in a source-less bluish-white radiance. |

As Qayan hurls himself out the passageway and into the intersection, preparing to break to the right, he hears a sudden, strangled choking sound from behind him. It is followed up by a roar of pure rage and fury, and the sound of claws raking against stone.
Another roar, and another...but apparently, the pursuit has ceased. |

Qayan, sensing the lack of pursuit, slows his stride
then turns back to quietly observe the beasts predicament.

The creature lies outside of both ordinary and darkvision, though you can still faintly hear movement ahead, and heavy breathing (after first calming your own).

Re: Chapter 2P: The Trap ...

As you edge forward, you can make out the greyish form of the creature, standing somewhat bent over in the narrow, short corridor, both pairs of arms crossed, at the edge of your vision (this about fifty feet up from the intersection). It seems calm and controlled now, but the large gouges and claw-marks in the walls suggest that this is a recent change in demeanor.
In fact, there appear to be two sets of clawmarks...one right by the creature, another about twenty feet closer to you, faintly visible. end of thread |
