Grim'rundul's expression doesn't change. "Come on, and be wary."

Following Gron'rindul to the south, Valarion can't help but feels his stomach turns. Muttering under his breath, Valarion mumbles, "To quote Halaster tha Mad, filthy creatures, 'tis the end that suits thee..."

Zanas is shocked by the horrid sight. Nothing deserves a fate like this. She follows the others, looking for any sort of survivor among the fallen.

You continue slowly into the chamber, remaining wary. As you cross the room, you catch sight of an archway at the end, an archway to bare, dressed stone. Base to cap, it is covered in dwarven runes, and the capstone itself is inscribed with the mace-and-boot emblem of Marthammor Duin, the Finder of Trails.
The center of the chamber has a ceiling nearly thirty feet high. As you gaze about, Qayan and Gron'rindul both catch sight of a figure crouching high atop a tumbled-down stack of stone, just below the ceiling. Covered in grey fur, it crouches low and watches the group intently. |

"Well we have found the archway you seek, and still no mind flayers." Khasar says, "What do you want to do now?"

Trying not to let on he has seen the figure, he motions for Khasar to come close. He then whispers, "There is something up on the ruins of stone, off to our left. Pass the word to the others...quietly, and we will then deal with it."

Portal Guardian, Surprise round | ||
![]() Unfortunately, the keen-eyed creature sees Gron'rindul tense, and leaps down from above, charging to the attack! Almost without thought, Qayan smoothly draws his pistol and fires on it, just as it leaves the rocks. The bullet strikes it in the shoulder, and blood gouts from the wound. It dives forward off of the rocks. At first, it looks like some great hunting cat...a tiger or a lion...covered in grey fur. Howe'er, it has six legs and moves with cunning as well as swiftness. As it lands to strike, howe'er, it becomes likewise clear that it is something else entire, for as it claws, it rises back up upon it's hind legs, and belies a much more humanoid appearance than would be expected. The creature lands heavily next to Khasar, its four claws raking downwards upon him with the force of the charge. Ripping and tearing at him, savaging him with claws and a tooth-filled maw, the creature drops Khasar to the floor, a bloody mass of flesh that twitches uncontrollably. Standing full, it's grey fur now covered in crimson, the creature is nearly ten feet tall. It gazes at all of you with feral eyes, preparing to slash the rest of you to ribbons. |

Shouting to distract the monster from Khasar, Gron'rindul moves in, drawing forth his wand, and touches it to Khasars form. Softly speaking "Hasark", the healing magics flow through the wand into Khasar's mangled form, restoring some semblance of life and staunching the flow of blood.
Lowering his smoking pistol calmly, Qayan watches impassively as his good friend is cut down before him. Noting Grons intent to assist Khasar and the resolve in Valarions eyes, the tiefling nods grimly and draws his blade. Here brute! I am your new foe now Qayan stabs at the creature, thinking he had a clean hit...yet his blow strikes empty air. The creature seems to shift before him, moving from place to place without actually taking any steps. The creature turns, flicking a bit of blood from the bullet wound that seems to have had little effect, and launches a series of attacks against Qayan. Dodging a claw, turning another aside by bare inches with his blade, Qayan still suffers the blows of the creature, and a bite to the shoulder. He ducks away just before the creature is able to get a solid grip, his intent to try to tear Qayan apart as he did Khasar quite plain. |

This is not good. considers Zanas, This cave, this city, this place... it is horrid! Every turn has a new suprise. Every new suprise a new horror. And every horror a feeling of hopelessness! Hate this place, so very much. Zanas watches warily, ready to retreat when the heavily wounded characters have already withdrawn. As she does so, recognition dawns upon her face...this is a Ghirrash! A hunter and stalker of the shadow-realm. Quick, smart, and ever-so-deadly.
What... oh come on, can we not catch a break? Can these tunnels simply be straight, and clear of monsters and brain eater, towards a portal? Can these creatures not just hand us beverges instead of hand us a beating? Valarion stumbles back and incants in an Arcane tone, eyeing the creature with the most friendly look possible, and tries to convince it to stand down. The creature, however, already enraged with battle and the bullet in it's shoulder, pays no heed save for a brief pause when the effect washes over it. Gron'rindul heals Khasar, and then flips his axe back into his hand, ready to strike. Gritting his teeth, Qayan strives to hold the beast at bay. His blade whirls and parries with lightning speed. Without turning, he bellows: "Get out! NOW! Back the way we came!" Qayan's one half-hearted attack is easily batted aside, and he is rewarded by two further raking claws, along his right arm and his chest. Each is fairly deep, and blood continues to spill out over torn cloth and shreaded metal, though again he dodges out of the creature's tearing grasp. |

Frightened by the power this creature displays, Zanas takes aim and fires her crossbow once, then turning without even looking to see that the blow had struck home, she darts out of the room.
Gron'rindul shouts, "Valarion, start hitting it with something that will actually hurt it! Khasar, get out of there - roll away if necessary! Qayan, let's start the retreat!" "Hurting it would be easier if I can get a clear path to it!" Valarion calls out as he incants a different word, and blue force missiles streak across the chamber and strike the creature. The blue streaks slam into the creature, leaving burns upon it's flesh. Gron'rindul watches the creature intently, preparing to defend his comrades, and withdraw behind the last of them. Sensing his comrades leaving him, Qayan dodges another savage claw and then falls backwards into a roll. Somersaulting end-over-end and springing nimbly back up to his toes, the tiefling turns and breaks into a run allowing Gron to bring up the rear. Snatching a phial from his waistline, the tiefling quaffs a potion as he bids a hasty retreat. Confused and in pain, Khasar trusts his companion and does as he is bid. Rolling away from the beast Khasar looks morre like he is trying to put out a fire than avoid any attacks that might be directed his way. He earns another sharp claw blow across his back for the troubles, and limping, bleeding, stumbles out of the chamber. Striding backwards, not quite fending off another claw strike, Gron'rindul makes his way to the entrance to the chamber. The creature crouches down, then leaps upon Gron'rindul bodily, bearing him down to the ground. Clawing savagely, metal, leather and flesh are all torn asunder. Still crouched with it's four front paws upon his body, the creature gazes out at those of you gathered beyond the rough stone arch, tensing as if to leap at you once more, and so heavily bloodspattered that there is no doubt as to the condition of the dwarf underneith him...he could not have survived it. |

What is that doing here? It should not be here! I thought those were a myth, or a joke, or something! Which one of those horrid Illithids thought this was funny?
Zanas moves away from the thing, staying with the others. Now another one's dead. Don't think we'll be getting the body anytime soon, either. Why? Everytime, why? What in the nine hell's name is that? Gron'rindul... "Retreat!" Valarion calls out as he quickly retreats, "we can't help him anymore, he's gone, we can't have his sacrifice be in vain, no more lives shall be lost today!" Seeing Gron'rindul go down under the monsterous beast, Khasar makes a lunge for his companion. "GRON'RINDUL! NNNOOOOOO." he shouts aas he feels his fellow survivors hands pulling him back, shouting for him to retreat with him. Coming to his senses Khasar quickly follows his companions. "MOVE!!" Qayan's shout propells those before him onwards, and the group emerges in the earlier chamber. Behind, as the gloom fades to blackness, the creature sleekly slides underneith the archway and, sides scraping the walls, sets into a loping pace down the hall. Despite the tight space, the creature moves swiftly...barely contained menace...and it nearly reaches the far end, and the entrance to the chamber you've withdrawn to. The creature is not far behind. Just as you think it a creature of brute force and pure menace, a harsh whisper in Common from the corridor rips through the rubble-strewn chamber. "One down, four left. I smell you, I hear you...and I shall soon tear your flesh, each in turn, just like the little stonies and your Dwarf companion. Run...run while you can. I enjoy the hunt!" |

"It's a creature of the Shadows! Don't let it trick you! We must get to the surface!" Zanas urges her companions onward as she darts into the far tunnel.
In turn, Valarion Qayan and Khasar follow...Khasar beginning to labor from the loss of blood and constricted by the armor he bears. The creature shoots out of the rubble-strewn hallway, darts across the room with frightening speed, and then begins to squeeze into the tunnel behind you. Khasar can almost feel the creature's breath on the back of his neck. |

Zanas looks back, seeing Khasar getting closer towards the monster with every few second. That is not good. Not good at all. Wish we had enough time to get rid of that armor. Well, if we had enough time to do that, we wouldn't need to get rid of the armor. She continues to retreat, but stays a few feet ahead of Qayan.
Valarion retreats again, but seeing the presistance of the beast, he turns around, and incants in arcane tones, and looks at it in the eyes. "Shouldn't you return to your post? It's been a while. Chasing us here is meaningless... you enjoy the fun, your bosses might not." With a rough laugh, the creature replies, "bosses? I report to no one, do as I please...still, you're right...you're not worth the bother. And you'll be back...they always come back, thinking to do better the next time." Pulling back out of the narrow tunnel, dropping to all sixes, the creature turns and casually strides back towards the portal chamber. Breathless, the group reassembles in a rubble-choked intersection a couple hundred feet south. |

Gasping for breath, bent double, his hands on his knees, Khasar croaks out. "He is right about one thing... we WILL be back. I will not leave Gron'Rindul to rot in this hole."
Looking across at his companions he asks "Do we head out? the preists of Tempus will surely help us." |

After the creature walks away a good distance, Valarion sighs, and sits down with his back against the wall. "What are we going to do? Should we head back up and figure out a way to deal with this, or should we first try to get some... something that is part of Gron'rindul, so that we may see him return to us?"

I say we ascend to the city and rest for the night then we can come back here with a plan to defeat that thing and retreive Gron'rinduls remains." Khasar states, standing up now that he has caught his breath. Then, turning to Zanas, "You seemed to know what that thing was, care to fill in the rest of us?"

Qayan looks grim. His crimson eyes flare in time with his labored breathing. This is not the end. That thing will pay. I so swear it. Gron gave his life for us, and we owe it to him in return
Then, with a deep breath, the tieflings eyes dim slightly. However, I agree with Khasar. We are overextended. Gron isnt going to get any more dead, and there is no sense in diving back into that meat-grinder simply out of vengeance. I say we return to the temple and seek whatever aid we can from them. We can heal our wounds and reflect on what has happened. I am certain that together we can devise a plan to overcome this challenge. |

"That thing is a Ghirrash. It is a creature native to my Plane. The Elders used the story of it to scare children. I never learned whether it was true or not, but it seems that it was. From what I remember, this creature is quick, cunning, and very cruel. Obviously it is also strong, as we know all too well. I remember that the tales were very effective in keeping the children from the other places. I think it might be a good idea to outsmart it, as brute force is no match for both strength and cunning."
She thinks for a bit, then says to Valarion: "Though I do believe creatures of shadow dislike light. Do the Red Wizards find intrest in such spells? |

"Some Red Wizard indeed enjoys spells of light... however, I am not one of them." Valarion says casually and quickly changes topic, "Very well, we should quickly return to the temple, and perhaps we'll be able to recover and hopefully retrieve Gron'rindul in the very near future. It's possible that since this ancient ruin could be of interest to the dwarven priests, they will not request too much of an offering for Gron'rindul's return."

Almost under his breath Khasar mutters, "Yes the dwarves, they might be more helpful than the preists at Tempus Halls were."
Turning to the rest of the group Khasar speaks up. "Well lets go, I want to get out of here before that thing changes it's mind. Besides, Talking is not getting us any closer to helping Gron'rindul." With that the Tuigan turns and sets about leaveing the cavern. |
