Chapter 2N: The Passage is Barred |
Lead | |
|
Not one, but two secret passages have come to view within the lair of the Illithid. However, each appears to be keyed...and the key lies not within your hands.
Gathered in the darkness, looking at the doors that block your progress, you consider your options... |

After quite some time of working in relative silence, Qayan will speak. Alright. Lets force this lock, Zanas. I know we dont have much to work with, but I think we can do it. Ill help however I can. Here lets set up these chairs
[Qayan will assist Zanas in her taking 20 attempt to Open Lock on the indentations in Mirimals chamber. Qayan needs to succeed against DC10 to add +2 to Zanas check. He is Open Lock +5. She is +11. If I succeed in helping, then the combined total is +13. With a Taking 20 attempt, together we can tackle a DC33. Anyone else got any way to help? Spells maybe?] |

Valarion shakes his head, "I have no means of helping in this manner, but if all else fails, we can maybe try the Khasar's Spellbreaker again... if this lock is magical in nature. Even if it is not, maybe Khasar can simply smash it open."

A slight "Tee-Hee" escapes Zanas's lips as she begins to work on the lock.
She goes through any and all possible ways to get the lock open, using as much time and effort needed. A grin stays plastered on her face, unchanging, as if she is trying to mislead the lock, duping it like in a game of cards. She gladly accepts Qayan's help in opening the lock. |

As the rogues work in unison Khasar speaks up.
"Didn't we find an amulet similar to Gron'rinduls in that alchemists place. You remeber after the fire? If this is some magical lock, as opposed to a mechanical one, is it possible the enchanment on the amulet is still strong enough to open our way?" |

Gron'rindul shakes his head. "THat one was misshapen by the heat of the fire. Its lines would no longer fit in the indentations. Besides, from what I could make out, that one had only four lines as well."

"I could not remember how many lines it had. Oh well, it was worth a try." Khasar says. After a few minutes of thought he speakes up again. "If these mind powes are as rare as you say might the key be... tuned... to one who uses them? Would you be willing to part with your amulet for a moment? Maybe this sinew can effect the amulet in some way?"

Gron'rindul shrugs, "I suppose it's possible." He tosses Khasar the amulet, and watches Qayan and Zanas continue their work.

"Thank you." Khasar says as he takes he amulet from Gron'rindul. He then holds the amulet in his right hand and consintrates on it and on the sinew, willing the sinew to change the amulet.

After a few minutes, Khasar's failure eventually leads to frustration. A bit of inspiration strikes Zanas, and she snags both the original amulet, and the one distorted in the fire.
Picking through the small pouch at her side, she drags out a small hacksaw and sets about making a series of cuts in the fire-distored amulet. From time to time, she glances at Qayan, having him look over her work to be doubly-sure she's missing nothing. Carefully weighing and measuring them, and glancing repeatedly up at the indentation, she eventually produces a bit of extra metal that she holds tight against the original amulet. Holding both pieces up, she places them against the indentation, gives it a twist, and a large section of the stonework shifts inward, revealing a passage heading north. |

Re: Chapter 2N: The Passage is Barred | ||

Yes, it worked! It worked! By the deep darkness of the hidden one, it worked! How? How could I have thought of such an idea? But it worked! It worked!
The grin on her face surges into a giant smile, a laugh accompanying it. She lets out a string of odd phrases in a light, eerie language, almost a whisper, while looking at a dark corner. Then, pointing at the open doorway, she lets out another string of words, in a mocking tone. Then she speaks to the others, trying to keep it quiet, whispering, yet with a distinct anxiousness to the words. "Come, come, there are things to be found! We shall find them, and we shall finally cut them deep! We must be cautious, but if we hurry, we can catch them by suprise! Qayan, come, let us scout ahead." She then goes down the passage, walking lightly, staying close to the walls, and nearly disappearing into the shadows. |

"Wow, good job. It's good that you are on our side." Valarion comments as Zanas and Qayan quietly skulks ahead, and turns to Gron'rindul and Khasar, "It's quite possible that our target is near, if this thing requires such an diffcult lock... even if we are second-guessing wrongly, we cannot afford to be less cautious. Let's make our preparations and make haste." With a low, whistle-like chant and a twist in the wrist, a nearly transparent disk appears, circles about Valarion's body for but a brief second, and disappears.
(OOC: Cast Shield, +4 Shield bonus to AC, duration 7 minutes. Move silently to follow Zanas and Qayan.) |

"Yes, let us go." Khasar whispers as he moves to follow Qyan and Zanas at a safe distance, keeping as quiet as possible.

Silently, Gron'rindul again takes up the rear, quietly muttering a prayer to Clangeddin.

Treasure chamber | ||
|
The passage continues north...and stretches on for some distance. Fully a hundred feet and more it continues. Finally, it concludes in a square chamber, fourty feet on a side.
Across the way, a trio of chests stand against the northern wall. They all lie closed, though from your lights a slight glint of metal upon the floor, likely copper, suggests that a few coin have been spilled here. To those at the fore, Qayan and Zanas, a faint, high-pitched voice can be heard. It sounds as if it is coming from the centermost chest. "Hello? Is there someone there? Help! I'm trapped in here. Oh please, let it not be those cursed mind flayers. Hello?" A slight pounding noise accompanies the plea. |

Axe ready, Gron'rindul stands to one side of the chest, awaiting someone to unlock it.

Khasar flanks the chest, opposite Gron'rindul. He is wary, figuring this for a trap, but thinking it is better to spring it and be done with it thatn to leave a potential enemy at his back. Picking up on his anticipation the mass on his arm pulses and flexes... waiting.

Qayan puts a black-nailed finger to his lips, signaling for everyone to be silent.
Then, moving close to Zanas, the tiefling whispers: Before I forget: brilliant work back there. Well done. Really. The tieflings features grow most serious. But I caution you we stalk a cagey foe. Stay sharp. Stay professional. One slip and we may all pay dearly. Time enough for revelry when we are done. Right? A grin seeps back onto Qayans face as he continues. We should check the area for traps now. I dont buy any of this. [Search +8, traps on area around chests and the chests proper] |

Re: Treasure chamber | ||

Open it? What would that do...
The grin that was occupying the rogue's face vanishes. "OPEN IT? Just open it? What? Why? How? Open?" Her face seems to be riddled with disbelief at the thought. "This is a trap! The chest could be primed to go off, killing the opener and the one in the chest, it could be some sort of malicious creature, it could just be a figment, it could be anything." Zanas pauses for a moment, her head pointed at the floor, her face going through several contortions. After a bit, she regains her complexion, raising her head. "I am sorry. I should not have acted like that. However, I do feel very strongly that we should check for traps or the like. We must be very cautious." Zanas then goes to check each chest, being very thourogh, and giving each the same amount of attention. |

Re: Treasure chamber | ||

A secret door leading to a room with chests... right, that would be too easy. Valarion is disappointed but relived at the same time, disappointed that his spell may not be of use, but relived that they do not yet need to face the fearsome creature of the Underdark. Having no skill in searching for traps, he looks up and around and see whether he can find something of interest, maybe more inscriptions or "locks."

Re: Treasure chamber | ||

As you gather, warily, around the chests, arms at ready, you all hear the voice again from within the center chest.
"Oh, please tell me you're here to rescue me, I've been down here for such a...oh, nevermind." The voice shifts quickly, suddenly becomming deep, and a large tooth-filled mouth crosses the front of the chest. "It's obvious you folks are too clever to fall for it anyways. Hey, settle down...put that axe away. I just want to talk, ok?" |
