Chapter Two, Prince of Darkness (ParadoxofMe) |
Lead | |
|
You stand alone in the middle of a ravine within the Stormhorns. The voice that accompanied you briefly was gone, and you now hear nothing but the howling wind and feel nothing but the freezing coldness. Apparently you are no longer blocked from your destination, however you will need some sort of protection against the murdering coldness.

Darvi stands, thinking a moment of the mysterious person who had left in such a hurry, and of the brutal winds that chilled him, "This is why I live down south..." he mutters to himself. Shivering, he looks around for a cave of some sort that could give him some temporary shelter so he can catch his thoughts and figure out a way to keep warm.

No visible caves can be seen in the surrounding area. Two choices lie before you: You can risk your life by travelling forward, hoping for shelter of some sort before you freeze to death, or you can retrace your step back to a warmer area for your rest before you figure out what to do.

Silently, Darvi curses himself for not preparing an endure elements spell. He hesitates a moment, standing in the bitter cold, freezing, before he decides to turn around. He'll walk only as far as he feels he has to and rest.
When he rests, he'll replace one of his spells for an endure elements spell. |

You return and locate a safe place to rest. Very few creatures travel by this place, and your rest is undisrupted. Comes morning, your mind is refreshed, you again replenish your spellcasting abilities.

Casting endure elements, which he had made sure to prepare, Darvi sets forward, retracing the steps he had to make the previous day and going beyond. He doesn't bother with a disguise, since it doesn't seem that it will do him any good at this point.

You proceed up the mountains, and freezing winds and the snow storm no longer hinder you, but the sight is still awesome. By late afternoon, by your estimation since you can't really tell the movement of the sun in this kind of weather, you see a few stone houses vaguely in the snow in front of you.

Darvi walks a bit further and stops, staring at the houses carefully. He knows that giants are known to live in these mountains, and he tries to determine if these houses belong to giants or smaller folk. He looks around the area of the houses for any other signs of life.

The houses are actually quite small, for sure they cannot be the dwellings of Giants. It would appear they are just normal sized housings for typical humanoids. There are no signs of life around the houses at this time.

Curious, but cautious. Darvi will attempt to go around the houses and continue on his path. Surely this cannot be what he's looking for, and talking to people only brings trouble.

YOu circle around the house and contiune your way. As you pass by, despite the howling winds, your exceptional senses can safely inform that there are no sounds of any sort coming from the inside of these houses. Either there are no one in them, or whoever's in them is not making any sounds at all.
Passing by this site, you travel on until about nightfall. Just when you think you should start to look for a safe place to rest for the night, you near the faint sounds of steel striking some hard objects. |

Doze stops once again, and tries to determine where the noise is coming from. If he can tell, he'll cautiously walk towards the sound, trying to stay hidden. A blacksmith? Up here? Couldn't be....

As you advances pass the houses, you now hear the sounds clearer and louder now, down the hills. You are perhaps on the very top of the Stormhorn, and as you look down, you can discover the source of the odd sounds: it wasn't some blacksmith at all, it was a battlefield. From this distance, you can only discern that there are two humanoid armies, both few in numbers, and one of them to the west has some sort of dark aura about them that flashes on and off.

Darvi watches as the armies fight each other, "Of all things..." he stares at them for a moment, astonished that so many could bare the cold to fight the battle. He tries to see how many there are and to what nations and races the two armies belong to, while remaining hidden from sight.

You move closer, and you are sure you are not noticed in this kind of environment... not to mention they are engaged in a live or death situation. The two armies appear to be unfamiliar to you: one side of them is some sort of humanoid that is black, but a different kind of black than the Drows; the other normal humanoids, including Humans, Dwarves, Elves, and so forth. The "darkness" that goes on and off appear to be supernatural or magical, and it's being constantly dispelled by light, and reeracted again and again during the battle. Neither side shows a significant advantage over the other.

Darvi watches for a moment, he mumbles to himself, "They might be protecting the same thing I'm after..." He sighs, and hunches down out of sight. He'll rest here for the night, watching the progress of the battle and remaining hidden. In the morning, he'll cast Endure Elements before he does anything.

By your approximation, it's nearly suppertime as the battle ceases. No obvious victor emerges as both sides retreats after sustaining heavy casuality. Corpses scatter about the battlefield, but to your surprise you can only observe the corpses of the usual humanoids; there are significantly less dark humanoids in the army size, but there are no corpses of them at all.
A rift of some kind opens in the space behind these dark humanoids, they step into it and promptly disappears. The remaining force gathers their ally's remains and moves up the hill, towards your current position. |

Darvi's eyes widen and he runs for cover as fast as he can. If he can't find a suitable place to hide, he just runs until he's confident that he's out of sight.

With the heavy snow and the winding mountain paths, it's easy enough for you to hide from the advancing army. Slowly, they climb up the hill, and enters the site of housing. You can see them clearer now, and they are mainly Human, with some Moon Elves, Wild Elves, as well as Lightfoot Halflings. Silently, they separate into different groups and enter different houses. You did not notice this at first, but you soon realize the amazing finding that such a large army can enter these small houses fully. Soon, no one is left in sight.

Darvi stares at the houses in astonishment. He watches silently as the people disappear into them. Curious (though knowing it a stupid thing to do), he slowly and silently tries to move in for a closer look at these houses.

These window-less, stone-crafted houses appear to be nothing out of ordinary from the looks. The doors are all shut, and you appear to be the only one in this freezing mountain top.
