You travel east for a few days following the River Delimbiyr, and can now see the town of Llorkh across the river from you, sitting at the fork of the two streams that comes down of Graypeak Mountain. To maintain a reasonable pace, it's obvious that you should turn either south or north, as a large group of people travelling pass the mountains is simply too inefficient and dangerous.

"Heading south migh save us a few hours... let's take that route. We don't have the time to lose going through the pass." Bedwyn orders his men and asks that the dragon join them in moving south.

You turn south to avoid the high mountains, and travel through the small hills. After a day, once again travel on the plain ground southeast, near the Marsh of Chelimber, towards your final destination of Cormyr. Your monotonic travelling experience finally ended on sixthday, secondweek of Ches... and not in a good way. During the evening, as your troops are resting and taking their meal, you hear the screams of some of your men, followed by the shouts of "We are under attack!"
With the starlight and some faint hues from your camp fires, Bedwyn can vaguely make out three groups of darkish creatures rapidly advancing on you, and you already have two or three men down in the eastern site. Malachix with his keen sense can preceive them as well. <Combat Initiated. We will be using mass combat rule, if you are familiar with it, great, if not, simply describe your actions and your commands. You can also desinate reasonably how many of each type of followers you have in each unit. Bedwyn begins yelling out his orders. "Archers, crossbowmen, anyone with a ranged weapon, take a shot then fall back thirty feet. Everyone else, form up and hold the enemy. Prepare for a fighting retreat... we'll have cover in a few moments!"
He then casts evard's black tenticles at the southernmost enemy position, hoping to catch as many of the enemy as possible within the spread of the spell. Once he has cast his spell, he moves 30 feet behind the westernmost ranks as he yanks out his rapier and makes sure his men move forward and that he has room to deploy his instant fortress next round. |

(Bedwyn)
As you order your troops, you can now see your enemies: they are shadowy figures that you recgonize as Shades. They wield mainly greatswords, some with crossbows at the rear rank, and you see another small squad of enemy units and a single shadowy figure emerges at the edge of your sight. You cast the spell as dark tentacles grows out of ground in the middle of two northern enemy units, several of them are instantly grasped by the tantacles, but others press on against your units. The number of these creatures are few, but they quickly engages your units as they are suddenly forced to reposition themselves regarding the enemies' direction. As the chaos of switching ranks contiune, you realize you are losing your men to the Shades, while their attacks are nearly useless against these creatures. Haraluk moves back with you, and incants as sparks of light moves east, mending the wounds of some of your men to the north. ======= (Malachix) You activate your magical ring and vanishe our of sight. You fly towards the southeastern enemy squard, and notice they are shadowy figures unknown to you that seems to fade in and out of the darkness around them. From above, it's a slaughter; the Elf's men seem to be doing no real damage to the enemies, while the greatswords from these creatures cut them down one by one. <Initiative: -Hostile units -Bedwyn and followers -Malachix -Haraldur Current Initiative in bold.> B: Bedwyn H: Haraldur M: Malachix (Invisible, Flying, Altitude 30ft) S: Unformatted Shadowy figure. Bedwyn makes doubly-sure that nobody is within the deployment radius of his Instant Fortress, then deploys it. He orders his men to fall back to the tower while he asks Haraldur if he has any spells that can take care of these guys.

Malachix makes sure he captures as many enemies as possible and as little allies as possible in his breath.
Then he breathes a Recuped(-1) Maximized(+3) Shaped(+1) 10xClinging(+10) breath(acid) at the enemies, before flying away. Famous last words: Beholder--beschmolder Let me at it! Damn, Tiamat - you're one UGLY dragon... Hey, Cthulhu! Eat me! Mongols? I don' see no Mo- <THWEEEeeeCHUNK!> |

These creatures contiune to press on, and on the command of the single Shade at the back, each of front line units splits multiple beings, making them look massive in number as well as extremely diffcult to hit. The small group by the single Shade incants and releases darkish beads of fire that explodes among the troop, slaying some of them, but none of the grass below them seem to burn at all.
(Bedwyn) Seeing your warriors are falling rapidly in number and strength as they start to panic and lose moral, you deploy the instant fortress, turning the opening towards the east to allow your troops to fall in. The archers quickly moves in and proceeds upstairs for range support fire, while your other melee troops fight on as they retreat, although they are causing little to none damage to these Shades. <Moral Modified -1> Just then, you see Malachix fades into vision again as he breathes down at the Shades, releasing a line of corrisive acid that seems to wound these creatures. Haraluk shouts, "It's best to attack them with spells that to help the troops, it would be too time consuming and not practical at all!" Then he holds out the symbol of Lathandar as a pillar of white flame comes down from the sky, burning the front portion of the enemy unit, and several of them fall victim to the divine flame. (Malachix) You emit your acidic breath, creating a line of corrisive acid on these creatures. They seem to be harmed by it moderately, but none of them fall as a result of this attack. Your invisibility fades away as your employ your attack, and you fly away from the fray. <Initiative: -Hostile units -Bedwyn and followers -Malachix -Haraldur Current Initiative in bold.> B: Bedwyn H: Haraldur M: Malachix (Flying, Altitude 30ft) S: Unformatted Shadowy figure. Bedwyn moves to the southwest corner of the newly formed tower and points his finger at the southernmost group of shades, unleashing a fireball. He positions the ball to strike as many shades as possible while not hitting his own men.

OOC: darken, Malachix shaped the breath, so it's no longer a line but a cone. |

The shades contiune their assults, despite the damage sustained from the acid and the flames. Their numbers are decreasing, however, but you are not sure whether this is because your damage is effective, or whether their Illusionary doubles are fading away from the attacks. The mage unit attempts to produce the same spell again, but only one of them successfully complete the spell as others fail miserably due to the corrosive acid.
The lone Shade suddenly disappears as most of your units enters your new fortress. Apparently it is now full, the two units left outside defends it with melee weapons while receiving support fire from the windows above. You return in kind with a Fireball spell, which is significantly more powerful than their odd sorcery, and burns the Shade as well as the grass and trees around them. Haraldur reaches his hand out and again heals your frontline troops, extending their lives maybe momentarily. <Initiative: -Hostile units <Current Moral modifier: +0> -Bedwyn and followers <Current Moral modifier: -2> -Malachix -Haraldur Current Initiative in bold.> B: Bedwyn H: Haraldur M: Malachix (Invisibile, Flying, Altitude 30ft) S: Unformatted Shadowy figure. Bedwyn casts a wall of force wrapped around the southeastern portion of his southernmost unit and looks particularly distraught at this turn of events. If he can protect his men for a little while longer...
He then moves 30 feet east to the front end of the tower, hoping that dragon's breath weapon will prove as deadly as he's heard dragon's breath weapons can be. |

The creatures fall one by one as the acid refuse to fade away. Slowly by surely, your troops are recovering from their dread situations, physically and mentally. The contiunal assults from your spells and the dragon's breath together was obviously not expected by your opponents.
Suddenly, the Shade leader that disappeared fades into reality right besides Bedwyn and hacks down with his greatsword, landing a clear cut on Bedwyn's back, causing him to cry out in pain. It was fourtunate that his spell was finished just seconds before the attack, and his units are now protected from the southeastern side of the field. The Dragon suddenly appears no far behind you, observing the battle. Haraldur incants a different spell and shines bright lights around the Shades, and suddenly their defenses are unlike before, with your men dealing good damage to them. However, multiple Shades in the area quickly waves their hands around, seemingly draws the darkness out of thin air and covers the lights again. Haraldur mutters something like "I knew it" and does not appear to notice the Shade's ambush against Bedwyn <Initiative: -Hostile units <Current Moral modifier: -1> -Bedwyn and followers <Current Moral modifier: -1> -Malachix -Haraldur Current Initiative in bold.> B: Bedwyn H: Haraldur M: Malachix S: Unformatted Shadowy figure. "Don't test me, you bastard," Bedwyn growls as he takes a 5-foot step back and blasts the shade who attacked him with a scorching ray. "Haraldur, whatever you did, do it again!"
Bedwyn will take his dodge bonus and a +3 bonus to AC from combat expertise (-3 to hit) against the shade. |

Looks like despite the disadvantage at the beginning, the battle is won by you. Haraldur's lights again shine upon them, causing the loss of their prowess as your army press forward, and the lingering acid from the dragon's breath earlier contiune to assult these creatures. The Shades are performing a fighting retreat at this point after receving a shout from the apparent leader. The leader, however seem unmoved and still insist on attacking you. Stepping closer to you, and Shade swings his greatsword as he dodges your magical ray of heat, but lands barely just one hit due to your agile movements. (15 damage)
